The state of the state does not look good and it appears Michigan lawmakers are going to make things much worse.
I received an email update on the Michigan budget proceedings from my representative Vicki Barnett. In the update she said that she would vote against any budget cuts for public schools.
I sent her an email asking what budget cuts she would support. In response, I received an message from her Legislative Director Kyle DuBuc. Dubuc responded thus:
The paragraph was designed to give me the impression that the Michigan Legislature has instituted spending cuts equivalent to 50%. This is nothing more than a subterfuge designed to fool the economic illiterate.
The reduction in general fund "revenue" is not due to any sort of fiscal responsibility on the part of Michigan lawmakers. Instead, the reduction in "revenue", is a direct result of liberal policies that have the state mired in an 6 year, 1 state depression that has consistently put Michigan's unemployment rate at close to double the national average and created an environment hostile to business and productive enterprise. As a result, less wealth is being created, less people are working, less income is available to tax and despite an 11% increase in the personal income tax rate and a 100% increase it corporate registration fees general fund "revenue" has decreased.
Unfortunately, according to MyWay dot com, the only solutions Lansing can come up with are more of the same policies that created the current situation. Republicans want Democratic lawmakers to propose and pass tax increases, giving the GOP possible fodder to use against Democrats in next year's elections. Democrats hope to get a leg up by painting GOP lawmakers as willing to hurt children rather than reinstate estate taxes on the rich. Instead of cutting taxes and creating a business friendly environment Michiganders are more than likely to get more policies, from both sides of the aisle, that further deteriorate our state and economy.
God help us!
