In 2006, Governor Jennifer Granholm went on statewide television and announced on behalf of the State of Michigan a promise to over 96,000 high school students now in college: if you pass a test called the Michigan Merit Exam, the State of Michigan will help fund your college education.

Notwithstanding the accuracy of standardized tests in measuring any area of performance, the Michigan Promise Scholarship, a four thousand dollar earned, merit-based grant awarded over the course of one's college career, was created to incentivize continued education and employment within the State of Michigan. But now, the opposite is occurring. As tax revenues decrease, politicians on both sides of the isle in Lansing have caved in to special interest pressure and prioritized political kickbacks and pork projects that would otherwise be used to fund the Promise Scholarship.

Many students across the state now face footing the bill for Granholm's broken promise or dropping out of school, all because they made the outrageous mistake of believing their elected official when she said (all the way back on October 1, 2009) that she would stand up for students and veto a budget without funding for the Promise Scholarship. Such healthy conflict between branches of power in government is supposed to encourage compromise and benefit the average citizen. But, the Michigan Senate refused to raise taxes and Governor Granholm chose to finance political contributors in Lansing over the "naïve" college students of Michigan. Played correctly, she could blame the legislature for the cut and use students to push for new taxes and tax increases on an already burdened population.

Well, I've got news for the Governor and every corrupt politician in the country: the youth of this nation see what you're doing and things are about to change. Next time you think you can use us in your political games, understand: your end is drawing near. We will do everything in our power to ensure you are held accountable to the people that elected you.

And for those who still think government can be trusted to prioritize your best interests, consider this: the state of Michigan must pass a balanced budget each year. The federal government does not. Michigan is forced to do so by law. The federal government is not. Michigan has had to choose between the special interests that fund the political careers of its politicians and the hardest working students in the state, and it chose the former. The federal government continues to procrastinate making such inevitable decisions by racking up insurmountable debt and unfunded liabilities.

But the day will come when government must pay its debts and choose between favors promised to special interests and promises made to average citizens. Pigs will fly in Washington before special interests are told no. So the next time government wants you to support anything that even sounds like a promise, anything that requires even the tiniest commitment on its part, remember how Michigan sold the future of its next generation. Indeed, a for sale sign already hangs about your neck.
