Democrats finally approve massive income tax hike!

By a 57-52 vote the Democrats in the Michigan House have finally approved their massive income tax hike.

Chris Ward and Ed Gaffney were the only Republican defectors.  A BIG thank you to Reps Judy Emmons and Dick Ball who'd long been rumored to be on the wrong side of the fence.  When push came to shove they chose to defend tax payers, not to accept Democrat bribes.

And a BIGGER thanks to the rest of the GOP caucus for fighting the good fight for nine months.

Reps Wojno, Griffen and Simpson were the two Democrats voting NO on this tax hike.  Meaning Reps Corriveau and Ebli have now voted to raise our taxes, despite their opposition to the earlier service tax hike bill.

Nice to know where they really stand when it comes to defending Michigan families.

Not sure if you missed that. Of course, it was hard for me to catch through the blind rage that I have about this tax increase.

What about the Senate? (none / 0) (#6)

The income and service tax increase is a done deal in the House but what about the Senate?

Does the Senate have to accept the bills as passed by the House, tied to the state shut down?

Any Republican senators other than Valde Garcia rumored to be on the fence or for the tax hike?

Do the Democrats have all 17 of their senators on board?

The Dems FOR SURE (none / 0) (#11)

have all 17 of theirs on board.

Ron Jelenik's name keeps coming up as the possible second YES vote in the GOP caucus on the Senate side.

I just saw on Channel 7 in Detroit that the Michigan State Legislature has the 2nd highest average salary in the country at $91,000 per year. I see a cut right there. How about someone steps up and leads by example?

let me know who proposed it and how long it has been sitting going nowhere?

    Thanks in advance.

    Who's "We", Kemosabe? (none / 0) (#32)
by John Galt on Mon Oct 01, 2007 at 12:51:18 PM EST
Well, we said thanks Dick but not this time. Granholm has a vision!
So why did we pass over DeVos...I'm trying to remember.

Who is "We", Kemosabe?  I'm interested to know, because I nor the people I keep company with passed on DeVos.

Anyway, politely I ask, could you live on nothing for X number of years? After all, isn't that what the governor is very close to doing to us?
When you run for the power to be in office, shouldn't your goals be the good of the state, not the good of your pocket book?  That's not the same principle for being a citizen of the state - one does not "run" and become "elected" to be a citizen.  One runs for the power and prestige (and apparently, the paycheck) to be an elected politician.

It makes no difference to me how Granholm would live sans her 170k salary.  She spends millions of dollars to get elected, I'm sure she can find a way to get by without her salary.

Nice idea though...makes one wonder what are the motivations
    The motivations of what?

Republicans spending like a drunk at a strip club. (none / 0) (#33)
by Ed Burley on Mon Oct 01, 2007 at 11:43:36 PM EST
That's how I described it to Howard Walker, who is my representative. Even though he, along with many other Republicans, voted against the tax increase, I still blame them for allowing the budget to grow to this size for all those years with Engler. Just because tax cuts generate more revenue does not mean that Republicans have to spend the increased revenue.

They could cut taxes further, or eliminate income tax altogether. Nope, they wanted to spend like drunks at a strip club; so I, for the first time in my 30 years of voting, am leaving the Republican Party and joining the Libertarian Party. If, and when, the Repubs decide to return to the principles of small government, I might just go back to voting for them. Until then, Ron Paul has my primary vote - after that, if he doesn't win, I'm voting third party.

wasn't in Lansing when Engler was.

I'm more than sympathetic to your argument and your outrage... but things can get dangerous when you start using nothing but party labels.  That's what some of the trolls here do and it always drives me batty.

Vote for the individual, not the party.  There are some Republicans I will NOT vote for.  Period.

Of course, there are many many many (many) more Democrats I won't vote for, period.

But, ultimately, you must do what you feel is right, of course.  :)
