Only 4 Days until Granholm and Dillon turn out the lights

"In the long term, I think perhaps a shutdown would bring people to the table that have been unwilling to put forth any ideas whatsoever to solve this crisis."

That according to House Democrat Majority Floor Leader Steve Tobocman in today's edition of Gongwer.  Oh, but the Democrats aren't angling for a government shutdown... no, not at all.  Except that they are.

Tobocman's quote reminds me of another.  "I have a plan and I'm working that plan and I'm working it and I'm working it and I'm working it."  That of course, was the Governor at every campaign stop, rally, speaking engagement and fundraiser from one corner of the state to another during the 2006 campaign.

    Some plan.

Technically we're four days away now, from the Democrat shutdown.  But in reality if there isn't a deal by midnight tonight certain bills will start going unpaid and certain services will be ground to a halt.

Unless Andy Dillon moves a continuation budget through his chamber... a continuation budget that passed almost unanimously out of the Democrat controlled House Appropriations Committee yesterday... then it's midnight or bust.

Of course, Dillon won't move the continuation budget because that would end the shutdown and he needs a state shutdown more than anyone.  How else will he wrangle up enough votes in his own caucus to move their own $1.7 billion tax hike?  He hasn't found any other solution so far.

And still the dog chases its tail.

It's been 270 days now since the start of this session without any leadership out of the Governor's office or the Speaker's.  Four more days then out go the lights.  Good job, lady and gentleman.  Way to provide real leadership these past nine months.

    Read on...

260 DAYS since Andy Dillon said:

"We are facing a budget shortfall this current fiscal year in excess of $500 million and next year's is in excess of $3 billion. Bottom line: We have a lot of work to do...

"We did this in anticipation of the looming budget crisis and the need for us to roll up our sleeves and get to work immediately."

Journal of the House, Jan. 10, 2007, pgs. 22-23

125 DAYS since the Democrat controlled House followed the Senate GOP lead on cuts, reforms and accounting changes that balanced the FY2007 budget without raising taxes.  An imperfect budget fix but one that closed the books, didn't steal a dime from taxpayers and avoided the governor's proposed cuts to education and Medicaid that would have caused schools to close early and people to "die" (the governor's words).

119 DAYS since the Democrat controlled House closed shop entirely to head up to Mackinac island for fudge, carriage rides and time on the porch of the Grand Hotel, wrapping up a period of time when they worked two of eleven days.  Looking back to the week immediately preceding this particular hiatus we find the Memorial Day weekend.  When you lay it all out in order the Democrat controlled House has done the following (taking into account their most recent vacation):

Four day Memorial Day weekend (Friday, May 25 through Monday, May 28)

Two day work week (Tuesday and Wednesday, May 29 and 30)

Five day weekend on Mackinac Island (Thursday, May 31 through Monday, June 4)

9 out of 12 days off because... why not? (Thursday, July 19 through Monday, July 30)

Working one day a week this month (5 days total in the month of August)

86 DAYS since the Senate GOP and House Dems agreed on a replacement for the hated Single Business Tax, clearing the legislative agenda to tackle the $1.19 billion FY2008 budget "deficit."

36 DAYS since the House Democrat majority approved "budget" bills in essence promising the state would print it's own money, spending $2 billion more than best-case projected revenues.

4 DAYS before the the Democrats get their government shutdown.

My relative who works in Lansing had a meeting yesterday about what to do if/when there's a shutdown.  He's in charge of updating a state website and has to implement a special cancellation page that will automatically load on Monday.

Nobody is being told ANYTHING.  No news on if their benefits will be suspended during the shutdown, if they'll recoup their pay (probably not), etc.

I don't know about anyone else, but I find the MSM's focus on no hard liquor, no casinos and no lottery tickets pretty shallow versus important matters like child protective services.  This should stop all payments to private agencies too.

If the Governess shuts the State down as promised, does she not in some cases cut off her "mole" to spite her face...that is, shutting off incoming revenue. Let's consider. Most all of the areas on the Governess' shutdown list generate INCOME. You know, the stuff the state's budget is short on.
If the State shuts down, does that mean no sales tax because no one is there to collect? Perhaps the Governess should consider cutting areas that don't generate income, like say, the "first Gentlemen's wage"? Hmm? The Governess should stop punishing the people of this state and start asking her "pet constituencies" to pony up.....

I work for, they are asking the facilities to look at ways they can cut - again.

But management really doesn't think that a shutdown will happen, but they are getting prepared if it does.

They know how long they can operate without having to close the doors, but we also know that we aren't consider an "essential service" either.
