    Welcome to Scoop!

To help you figure things out, there is a Scoop Admin Guide which can hopefully answer most of your questions.

    Some tips:

    • Most of the layout is changed in "Blocks", found in the admin tools menu
    • Features can be turned on and off, and configured, in "Site Controls" in the admin tools menu
    • Stories have an "edit" link right beside the "Full Story" link on an index page, and right beside the "Post a Comment" link on the full story page. They can also be edited by clicking the story title in the "Story List" admin tool
    • Boxes are what allow you to write new features for Scoop; they require a knowledge of the perl programming language to work with effectively, although you can often make small changes without knowing much perl. If you would like a feature added but cannot program it yourself, ScoopHost does custom Scoop programming as one of its services.
    • If you aren't sure where to look for a particular feature or piece of display, try the "Search Admin Tools" link in the admin tools menu.

    Detroit Mayoral Race

    Giggle of the morning.

Aside from the EFM and Bankruptcy taking away the fun of being mayor of Hiroshima North, the election's write in results are worth a guffaw. Mike Dugeon, a last minute write-in candidate for Mayor who was supposed to take away a number of votes through confusion from Mike Duggan got no more than the number of votes in his immediate family. The voting result:

    Detroit Mayor
Write In: Mike Duggan     44,395     45%
    Benny Napoleon             28,352     29%
    Write-In (other)    5,916     5%
    Krystal Crittendon     5,295     5%
    Lisa Howze             4,581     3%
    Tom Barrow          3,690     2%
    John Olumba          1,327     1%
    Fred Durhal Jr.     841     1%
    Willie Lipscomb Jr.     303     1%
    Angelo Scott Brown     182     1%
    Herman Griffin     165     1%
    Sigmunt Szczepkowski Jr.     146     1%
    Mark Murphy     142     1%
    Jean Vortkamp     138     1%
    John Telford     110     1%
    D'Artagnan Collier     91     1%
Write In: Mike Dugeon     17     1%
    17 Votes.

A few days ago Dugeon was carjacked.

It seems there was an encore performance.

The Stakes Could Not Be Higher

Cross-posted in The Wizard of Laws.

Tyranny, broadly defined, is the use of power to dehumanize the individual and delegitimize his nature.  Political utopianism is tyranny disguised as a desirable, workable, and even paradisiacal governing ideology.
                                              -- Mark Levin, Ameritopia

    Individual sovereignty is under attack.

Not the wacko, every-man-is-a-sovereign-the-United-States-is-a-corporation kind of sovereignty, but the notion that, as individuals, we have worth and dignity that deserve protection.

This attack exists in every corner of our society and has found its way into our language.  Liberal politicians talk about the "cost" of a tax cut and ask conservatives, "How are you going to pay for that tax cut?"  They thus view tax cuts as expenditures, but expenditures of what?  Of the money to which they deem the government entitled.

A tax cut "spends" nothing.  It is an acknowledgment that the money being taxed belongs in the first instance to the earner, not the government.  Most Americans would willingly pay taxes to support legitimate government functions, but we resist ferociously the notion that our incomes belong to the government.

The campaign is on, and those stimulus dollars will make up for all the lost pizza money contributions.

From those disillusioned graduates staring at the faded Obama 08 posters in their rooms.  In their mom's basement.

And just to make sure that you pigskin loving patriots out there don't beat the tar out of the wife or girlfriend because she is a little slow with your beer and nachos, the administration has a new PSA out.  Airing at special times during your favorite college football game, its a classic re-election ad.

    Your tax dollars at work.

Next week they will reportedly put out a new don't blow up the local abortion clinic ad.

Why Michigan Conservatives Need To Get Out And Vote

Michigan is truly a wonderful state and has many things going for it. Beautiful parks, geography, lakes, forests and four actual seasons.

We also have a strong tradition of innovation, manufacturing, engineering and design.

    We make things.

However, our states strong traditions have been under continuous assault from the progressive left for over 60 years. Progressivism has infested business, education and our state government.

We conservatives need to begin the roll back of the progressivism in our state and create a more conservative environment. An environment that is pro-economic growth, more individual freedom and an environment that is rooted in personal responsibility and not an all intrusive nanny state government.

    A Decision Must Be Made

Many of you have been regulars for years on RightMichigan.com.  There are reasons you come here.  For some, it might be to catch up on what is happening in the state politically, and perhaps even to get a conservative's view on the daily events affecting us in Michigan politics and social realm.  Nick De leeuw built a pretty good sounding board for conservatives across the state, and real policy and decisions have been made as a result of news and opinion made here.  And his writing up until a few months back was sought out by most who visited.  His reasoning pretty well considered, and he has generally demonstrated sound conservative principles.

Nick's opinion is a trusted one.  And I hope my own carries some weight as well.

We had both agreed early on, that three Republican candidates, Bouchard, Cox, and Hoekstra would be worthy candidates and would likely make great governors.  The primary had promise to produce at least one great result, and that result being a truly Republican governor for the state of Michigan.  To be sure, each candidate has weaknesses, either in policy or perhaps a personal area, but nothing that has not been overcome with either explanation, a recant, or apology.  "To err is human, to forgive, divine," and we move on.

As this is a primary, and only one of these fine gentlemen who represent Republican principles can be Governor at a time, RightMichigan.com writers and readers alike have done due diligence, and decided whom they will back.  Nick and I both looked at many different points of strength the candidates have.  Conservative values, commitment of service, ability to rally support, and overall electability in the general election.  On balance, we both came to the same conclusion, and have been supporters of Mike Cox in his bid to be Michigan's top executive.  Nick was serious enough to work for the Cox campaign directly.

    It comes at a cost.

Newest Guv Ads. Positive, Upbeat, and Rockin!

Seriously, no matter the side you are on, the Republican Governor candidate's ads are getting good and more upbeat..

My personal favorite is the first one for Mike Cox. (what can I say?) It addresses the real issue in Michigan, a LOUSY environment to do business, (unless you are hooked by bureaucrats in a bizarre Rumplstiltskin scheme..) and is not the place that investors look to first any longer.

The second ad also uses a fast moving theme, and shows Pete Hoekstra is working hard on his campaign.  Ideas bus.  It doesn't identify the problem as well as the first, but it points out the value of getting input from around the state.

Mike Bouchard's "look" ad is pretty good too. It identifies the problem, and offers him up as a solution provider in the past, and identifies him as a "conservative" which resonates well right now.

Rick Snyder talks of "re-inventing " Michigan government in his short spot, "Jobs."  He apparently wants to look at Michigan as a business, and apply business solutions.

All of the ads have one commonality.  They are focused on the candidate as the solution provider.  No cheap shots, no overblown complaining, and each worth looking at.

The ads for the top contenders below the fold.

    Locking In The Endorsements.

    By JGillman, Section News

Tags: Mike Cox, Michigan Chamber, Endorsements, Election, Republican (all tags)

A big boost for the Mike Cox campaign came in with a nod from the Michigan Chamber of Commerce as reported in yesterday's Detroit News:
Republican Attorney General Mike Cox picked up some instant credibility in his bid for governor Tuesday when the Michigan Chamber of Commerce announced it will endorse him.

The Chamber -- which has 6,800 member businesses, trade associations and local chambers of commerce -- is considered the pre-eminent business group in the state and a heavy hitter in the halls of the Capitol.

And just a few days ago, Cox received the much welcomed support of Former Gubernatorial candidate Dick DeVos and his wife Betsy, who said:
"As a lifelong Republican activist and former State Party Chairman, I have witnessed Mike Cox fight for conservative values with the courage of his convictions"

"Turning Michigan around requires a leader with the consistent integrity and strength I see in Mike Cox."

    With Dick Devos adding:

"Mike Cox has demonstrated, consistently, the toughness required of a CEO leading a troubled organization through a turnaround,"

"Michigan needs Mike.  Our job makers, our schools, our communities and our families need a can-do leader like Mike Cox."

Though endorsements are no guarantee of forthcoming win, a lot can be said for the ability of these high profile organizations and individuals throwing their support to one candidate over another in a field populated by many good people.
