  • Your New Scoop Site

    Welcome to Scoop!

To help you figure things out, there is a Scoop Admin Guide which can hopefully answer most of your questions.

    Some tips:

    • Most of the layout is changed in "Blocks", found in the admin tools menu
    • Features can be turned on and off, and configured, in "Site Controls" in the admin tools menu
    • Stories have an "edit" link right beside the "Full Story" link on an index page, and right beside the "Post a Comment" link on the full story page. They can also be edited by clicking the story title in the "Story List" admin tool
    • Boxes are what allow you to write new features for Scoop; they require a knowledge of the perl programming language to work with effectively, although you can often make small changes without knowing much perl. If you would like a feature added but cannot program it yourself, ScoopHost does custom Scoop programming as one of its services.
    • If you aren't sure where to look for a particular feature or piece of display, try the "Search Admin Tools" link in the admin tools menu.

Full Coverage Insurance For Michigan Taxpayers

The more "experienced" readers of this site might recall Michigan's Great Taxpayer Revolt of 1983.  In January of that year, newly-inaugurated Governor James Blanchard, who had promised in his 1982 campaign against Richard Headlee that he would not address the state's financial problems through a tax increase except as a last resort, wasted a grand total of one month sliding a 38% increase in the state's income tax through the Democrat-controlled state legislature.  The resulting fifteen-target recall campaign succeeded in taking out both Phil Mastin and David Serotkin (flipping the State Senate to Republican control), triggered the political ascension of a theretofore-obscure state senator by the name of John Engler (whose 1990 gubernatorial campaign against Blanchard carried the shadow of the 1983 revolt), and so thoroughly spooked state legislators that tax increases were a very touchy subject on both sides of the aisle for the next two decades.

    And then came Governor Granholm.

    Democrat Crossover Scheme

Just in case you've forgotten, there is a special primary election taking place in the old 11th Congressional District about a week from now.  According to the Official Michigan Special Primary Candidate Listing, this is going to be a non-issue for the democrats, as David Curson is unopposed.  The republican side of that ballot, however, is the entire reason for next week's special election in the first place.  And that's just what the mischief-makers on both sides are probably counting on.

A Message To Our Legislators - Beware False Choices

Not Enough Time To Put The Puzzle Together

My adult daughter, Jenni, is an LSSU senior majoring in Criminal Justice, minoring in Homeland Security, who enjoys Sudoku and word searches, and has as her hobby Criminal Psychology.  (Jason and Junior, you've both met her.)  We've discussed her doing a stint in Military Intel after she graduates, and she once asked me what I knew about the field.  I told her that intel work is often very similar to assembling a complex jigsaw puzzle without having any clue what the final picture is supposed to look like.

What I'm going to discuss below the fold is like that.  I didn't start accumulating this information until about a week and a half ago, and an issue a little closer to home has distracted me from figuring out how this all fits together (if it fits together at all).  So, because this is time sensitive, what I'm going to do is just lay out what I have here, keep the commentary to a minimum, and trust that the readers will figure this out (if that's even necessary at this point).

    How To Replace Party Leadership

I have more than once on this site cited a paraphrase of John F. Kennedy's warning:  Those who insist on making a peaceful takeover impossible will ultimately make a takeover by revolt inevitable, and perhaps even necessary.  Since we cannot seem to trust the blueblood elites in the establishment to get the message, let's go below the fold and discuss an idea to "grease the skids" for their removal from power.

Just so that we can continue to show Nancy Cassis a little attention here on RightMichigan, let me draw your attention to a little scheme to put taxpayers on the hook for boneheaded decisions made by their local governments, specifically with regard to labor agreements.

Because The Cycle Must Be Broken

Mentioning the term "abusive relationship" will often conjure up any number of images in the listener's mind, from a physically violent spouse or parent to a tyrannical employer or a manipulative neighbor.  But no matter the scenario or the type of relationship (domestic, intimate, personal, professional, or social), there is one thing that all truly abusive relationships have in common . . . exactly one common thread running through all abusive relationships that is the sole defining characteristic demarcating what does and doesn't make any relationship abusive.  And until the person on the receiving end of the abuse gets this, there is no chance of breaking the cycle.

    The Thrill Is Gone, Baby

    Highlights from MCC

But contrast the following bills included in the report to what happened in Wisconsin recently, where voters in effect confirmed major reforms enacted there last year:

Senate Bill 1125: Authorize more state government housing subsidy debt: Passed 33 to 5 in the Senate
House Bill 5246: Expand corporate research subsidies: Passed 87 to 20 in the House
House Bill 5541: Borrow more for university construction projects: Passed 85 to 23 in the House
House Bill 5705: Use Detroit utility tax for streetlights instead of police; raise city income tax: Passed 92 to 14 in the House
House Bill 5566: Increase school and local "deficit spending" debt: Passed 73 to 34 in the House

None of these bills would have passed without support from a majority of Republicans in either the House or Senate.

Adding to the discomfort, pension bureaucrats and the teachers union appear to have successfully stalled a Senate-passed bill to close the defined-benefit school pension to new hires, a transformational reform that would pay dividends for decades to come (it's not dead but may be delayed until next fall).

So much for that fed up with bloated budgets, big spending and taxing Jenny Granholm form of government that gifted the 2010 vote to the MI-GOP control in Lansing.  Every one of them deserves to face a primary challenger.
