Who are the NERD fund donors Mr Snyder?

    Raise the curtain.

Will the last person in Michigan, please turn out the lights?

Tags: Gov. Snyder, Pensions, Tax Hike, Yes...on money they already paid taxes on (all tags)

In what he feels is "necessary" to plug a massive hole in his budget that continues much of the status quo from Lansing, but fails to take into account will infuriate the senior population here in Michigan, Gov Snyder committed political seppuku this morning by taxing not only public pensions here in Michigan, but private as well.

So how's that going to pan out?

    {Why wait to see what will happen? I've included some examples below}

Raising taxes has always worked wonders when it has been implemented.

Why look at what happened in New Jersey?

    Or what happened in Maryland?

    How about Oregon?

    Um, New York?

    Er, Rhode Island?

    What?!? No! This can't be!

States that have raised taxes have driven away residents and not seen the projected level of money flowing into their coffers?

    But, but, but...

    Sorry, Gov. Snyder.

That money you are eying, the people who have rightfully earned it have already paid a tax on that. Several times over, in fact!

Morally, I don't agree with him. But Sen Brandenburg had this to say about the issue, "...when it comes to taxing pensions, that is a very difficult slope that I don't think I want to slide down. First of all, I'm a fiscal conservative and I would view that ... as a tax increase." (emphasis mine)

Will MI-GOP to grow a spine and rule this plan D.O.A.?

...comment on this later.  But, you're on the money, KG.

As it stands... This Snyder Budget is bigger than Granholms' last budget.

It's as if the new Governor's Office in Lansing has The Oval Office, Speaker Blinky and Dingy Harry ghostwriting for them.

    Till later...

Is anyone really surprised at this? It sucks but everyone knew what was gonna happen.

Interesting.  So for those of us still in the work force who are actually subsidizing cushy retirements for today's seniors, we need to just keep shelling it out.  Never mind the fact that the same retirement options will NOT be there for most of us under the age of 55.  No, instead we must hope our ravaged and measly 401K's will eventually grow enough in value to allow us a meager retirement as well.  For most of us under 50, we know in our guts that Social Security will not be there for us and virtually none of us have a "pension" upon which to depend.

I find it very interesting to hear so called "conservatives" whine that they may actually have to share in the shared sacrifices required to fix this state.  The budget deficits are real, folks.  Snyder doesn't own a money printing press and he can't run deficits.  No longer can we afford accounting gimmicks to balance the budget.  Real cuts must be made and made in a responsible way.

I'm not 100% thrilled with Snyder's budget either.  Would I prefer scrapping the entire tax code and trading it in for a consumption tax or a flat tax?  Maybe.  Something truly dramatic might have been preferred.

But from what I can tell, the plan proposed does a lot to help small businesses in Michigan get up off the mat and begin to thrive and, thereby, create more jobs - which creates more taxpayers, which some day may allow us to pay for grandma's subsidized retirement once again.

Until then, we're broke!  That's not just a slogan.  It's very real.  So very real spending cuts are required along with closing tax loopholes.  Making Michigan's tax code flatter and easier with a focus on generating economic activity and growth must be accomplished if we're ever to get out of this mess.

We elected adults to get us out of this mess.  Now we need to grow up and start acting like adults ourselves.

    I'm not really sure..

One COULD look at the changes being presented as solving problems brought about by particular demographic..  those ABOUT to retire.

    Ow.. who threw that?

    Anyhow..

The elimination of the EIC assistance is an interesting thing. I am not sure about any of you, but there have been times I have considered it to be "magic money" because it can cause some refunds to be larger than the total money paid in for taxes and SS BEFORE.  Seeing as an elimination here confused me, because I always thought of it as a federal thing.

The corporate tax and elimination of the MBT is really a big positive of the plan.  Simplification and elimination of a number of small value add and manufacturing businesses from the burdensome MBT will literally allow more employment.  I know this to be fact, as I saw jobs go away because of its implementation.

Lets break it all down and look at pros and cons.  My own first glance does not scream bloody murder.  The county folks wont be liking it, but its a start.

about it - if Snyderholm had done the same thing as Wisconsin's guv.  We would have two states under siege by union activists - think it would spread to other states?

BTW, Breitbart is reporting that the bus loads of activists bussed into Madison were funded by Zero's "Organizing For America" group.  And the Democrap legislators headed out of state were found in a luxury resort in Northern Illinois.  Tea party groups are now headed there and to Madison to counter protest.

I am putting on my comfy's and popping pop corn for the show!!!

Stand strong Wisconsin - don't let the unions take over your state.  If you give up now you are doomed!!!

Well, I hate to repeat myself but. (none / 0) (#13)

Yes, I predicted this. He misses the bigger picture to focus on those little tiny things that mean little. Where in hell is the mention of the need to fire about 25% of the state workforce because there is nothing for those people to do. Like The One, the Czarina hired new people like there was no tomorrow just to appease her one and only constituency the Commie Lib Progressive Labor unions. We do not need 65,000 state workers. You notice the areas that were filled with unneeded workers did not include the law enforcement areas. That was left to wither in the vine till we have a critical shortage of At Post Troopers. So we now enter Granholm's third term with her RINO alter ego running the show. We're screwed more then we know.
And yes, I agree. The Governor of the Cheesehead Republic seems to have more guts and common sense then the Turd, dammit I mean the Nerd ever will.

    Taxing Pensions (none / 0) (#18)
by Bruce on Fri Feb 18, 2011 at 04:46:57 PM EST
As a retiree, I expect that a return of inflation will not only come, but come with a vengeance given the spending spree in Washington.  When I was working, I could count on raises to make up for lost purchasing power... not so much with a pension.  But I could make it work with taxes on the pension even though the pension is not COLA protected and more of it will be needed for medical expenses as I age.

Of course, what I would expect is something for that money.  It's not just a transfer of wealth thing that bothers me.  It's a transfer of wealth with no accountability, responsibility, or similar sacrifice for those who get a pass on retirement health care benefits and even get state pensions for one state job while getting paid for working in another state job.  I expect a basic philosophical shifting from the way the state presently operates.

But when you get down to it, I have a choice as do hundreds of thousands [millions?] of other retirees.  It's called Florida... or Texas... or any other state that doesn't screw over the fixed and limited incomes of their seniors.

Think Michigan has funding problems now?  Wait until the Baby-Boomers put paper to pencil and conclude that they are better off elsewhere.  Those are seniors who put an awful lot of money into the local economy.

Maybe my home becomes my "summer home" and my residence goes elsewhere.  I like warm winters anyway.

The solution: eliminate the state income tax and replace it with a higher consumption tax.  Everybody pays and each person determines how much.  If you collect state assistance and use it for a big screen TV, you don't get a tax-free ride.  The state then gets to live on what it gets.

in laws are in Florida and yes there is no income tax but you should see what they pay in property taxes, home owners insurance and other fees.  It is not always what it is cracked up to be.

My sister-in-law just sold her house and it needed a new roof so part of the closing was a new roof.  Try hurricane proof mandated roofs.  Very expensive and costly - over $15 grand.
