Who are the NERD fund donors Mr Snyder?

    Raise the curtain.

Fool us once, shame on you. Fool us twice...

State Senator Wayne Kuipers recently announced that he is the first candidate in the race for the 2nd  Congressional District to sign Club for Growth's "Repeal it!" pledge to repeal Obamacare should it become law.  What's better than being first, of course, is being credible.

    The Repeal It! pledge states:

"I, Wayne Kuipers, hereby pledge to the people of my district (MI-02) upon my election to the U.S. House of Representatives, to sponsor and support legislation to repeal any federal health care takeover passed in 2010, and replace it with real reforms that lower health care costs without growing government."

But this is not the first pledge Wayne Kuipers has made to the tax payers of Michigan. Several years ago, Wayne Kuipers signed Americans for Tax Reform's, "Taxpayer Protection Pledge", in which he pledged to the taxpayers of his district "and all the people of this state that I [Kuipers] will oppose and vote against any and all efforts to increase taxes." Sen. Kuipers is listed as a signatory to ATR's Taxpayer Protection Pledge on the ATR website.

Unfortunately, in 2004 Kuipers either forgot his pledge, or hoped that the taxpayers would. He voted to raise taxes three different times, and earned himself inclusion into ATR's Taxpayers' "Hall of Shame".

When Sen. Kuipers joined with his colleague, Rep. Bill Huizenga, and voted to replace the SBT with the job killing Michigan Business Tax in 2007, he did so knowing he would once again break his promise to the people of Michigan. Add to this Sen. Kuipers' vote to raise the sales tax on services through out the state, and his later vote to replace this punitive tax on services with the 21.99% MBT surcharge, and a clear pattern develops.

It is because of this pattern of breaking his word and raising taxes on Michigan families and businesses that I read with some interest in the Kalamazoo News, that Sen. Wayne Kuipers will be a panelist at an upcoming health care town hall hosted by the Southwest Michigan Tea Party Patriots and Citizens for Common Sense.

Concerned citizens and Tea Party Patriots should be aware not only of Senator Kuipers' history of raising taxes and expanding state government, but that pledges made for the sake of expediency-- rather than for principle--are easily broken.

Fool us once, Sen. Kuipers, shame on you. Fool us twice--shame on us.

Sen. Kuipers has lost my trust (none / 0) (#1)

Well reasoned & well put.  I find it hard to believe that Kuipers or Huizenga would dare show their faces at a Tea Party event.  Neither have lived up to their conservative rhetoric on fiscal issues, and it's this disconnect that has given Republicans a black eye as of late. Common sense would say, if you aren't going to be a fiscal conservative, then don't sign the ATR pledge.  It's false advertising, Sen. Kuipers, and I for one won't get fooled again.

Riemersma is far and away the strongest candidate in the field. And in this district, it would be a shame if voters sent anyone but the strongest, conservative candidate to Congress. We need a leader, not another "deal" maker.

    Typical politician (none / 0) (#2)

Another example of a career politician saying what they think they need to in order to get elected.  Once in office, they cave and don't stick to their convictions.  We need someone who will stay true to their beliefs and deliver what they said they would.

    Kuipers = excuses (none / 0) (#3)

Well said Marlink. Kuipers may have wooden shoes on display at his desk in Lansing, but that doesn't mean he represents what the people of Holland truly care about: lower taxes.

His defense has always been a little something like this. "There was no other choice but to vote for a tax increase. The state government was in trouble...." blah, blah, blah, followed by more excuses.

Send Jay Riemersma to Congress instead. He'll simply ignore all that pressure from fellow legislators and make his own decision, lower taxes, one that will leave many West Michigan residents in the mood for Klompen dancing.

The loss of integrity (none / 0) (#4)

Well written.  I recall a saying: "no amount of money can allow a man to buy integrity, yet he can sell it for five cents."  While it is sad to see yet another public servant so easily make a pledge and ignore it when his circumstances change, it is perhaps the most appalling that we, his constituents, have allowed him to do so with relative few consequences.  How long will we sit by numb and ignorant to all the lies that our elected officials commit?  Its time for us to wake up.  Its time for those elected be held accountable for their words and actions.  Time to come home Kuipers.  Your time as a public servant is done.  You have lost your ability to serve us.
