When it comes to rebuilding the Republican Party, Michigan's longest-serving governor says he wants to be involved.

"I hope very much, as a result of this election just concluded, that the party will not take a further turn to the right -- it went too far to the right during the course of this campaign," Governor William Milliken said in a TV interview Sunday. "I hope now the Republican Party will rebuild itself ... that will include many factions and many elements and many philosophies within our party."

Milliken, who was governor from 1969-1983, stresses that he's hopeful for the future of the GOP, which may include him returning to play a role.

"I am going to do everything I can to help the party come back because it is in a state of flux at the moment - if not a state of near disaster," he said.

    Sounds like a plan... (1.00 / 1) (#1)

if you want to change the name of the party to "Democrats without even the pretense of principles."

Milliken may have been a Republican in the past.  He isn't a Republican anymore.  Why vote for a Democrat-lite when you can vote for a real Democrat?

Remember, this is the same guy who endorsed Jennifer Granholm and thought she'd do a swell job cleaning up Michigan's economy.

So, yeah, you'll forgive me if I'd rather take advice on party planning and politics from the wild rabbits living in my backyard.

Milliken claims we went too far right; I didn't realize that we had any coherent message at all.

Ballot Issues prove you wrong... (none / 0) (#8)

When there is a ballot issue that is clearly liberal or conservative, the people have shown that the trend toward conservative (the stem cell proposal was very muddled in message so that does not serve as a good gauge).

Republicans dont win by trying to be everything to everybody.  Reagan didnt campaign on that, Bush 41 didnt campaign on that, Bush 43 didnt campaign on that twice, and they all won when they campaigned as conservatives.  Throw in 1994 Republicans again to prove the point.  But, when we try to be the big spending party in order to make everyone happy, we lose big.

Milliken has been the media poster child for what the a republican in their eyes should be.  But that is not what is best for this state or this country.

    What is Milliken complaining about?

He got exactly what he wanted out of the past few elections.

I wish the guy would just sit on the sidelines and gloat--silently.

Gee, I wonder how that came about?

    Michigan Income Tax.

    SBT.

    Michigan Environmental Protection Act.

    The Bottle Deposit.

They practically sound like planks on the Democratic National Platform.

republicans is what's wrong with the party.

Yes, John Galt, a F****IN RINO!

As long as republicans listen to old time hacks that think government is the answer to solve this countries problems republicans will remain a minority party and be irrelevant.

"...Milliken, Eisenhower, Nixon, Rockefeller. They have all switched parties..."

Actually, all (except for Milliken) have switched planes of existence, as in being dead.  Milliken is a Republican sort of the way Lonesome Joe Lieberman is a Democrat.

    Country Club Republicans (none / 0) (#15)

It's not that the GOP doesn't have, or want, a big tent: it's that, if we have people in the party who want the platform to be identical to the DNC's platform, then they need to join the DNC.

Milliken is a part of the OLD Grand Old Party, pre-Goldwater. This was the party of Keynesian economics and corporate welfare. It's the party of regulation and high taxes. It was Goldwater that changed all that - that brought liberty-minded people into the GOP.

Back in the pre-Kennedy days, the Democrats were the conservatives, for the most part. That's why folks like Reagan said things like "I didn't leave the Democrats, they left me." The OLD Democrats were largely pro-blue collar, states' rights, and small business kind of people. Unfortunately many of them were also racists and segregationalists. It was the liberal Republicans that helped pass Affirmative Action, Voting Right, and Civil Rights legislation.

To me, this is the problem. Fundamentally, if you asked most conservatives or libertarians, they would categorically deny being in the pocket of the GOP. Why? Because the GOP does NOT always support those free market, liberty issues - sadly, neither do the Democrats.

So, we who have priniciples (unlike Mr. Milliken) are forced to ask the question: who will do the least damage to our great country? Some, like myself, felt that would be Sen. McCain; while others thought Sen. Obama would. I, and others, questioned whether having a moderate like McCain in the White House might do more damage, ultimately, than having a potential socialist there. That same question was asked back when Dole and Clinton were the candidates. We all know the result.

We must get past party - or we will keep getting the same result. Some here claim that we should get involved with the party - and that is true to some extent; but, why do we need to infiltrate only ONE party? Why can't we infiltrate the Democrats too? Why can't we become conservative Democrats, if the GOP won't have us? It's a legitimate question, one each of us has to answer for him/herself.

Screw Milliken. He's to the LEFT of Granholm (none / 0) (#16)
by Republican Michigander on Tue Nov 18, 2008 at 07:10:14 PM EST
I'll listen to a lot of people on rebuilding the party. I'll listen to those with leanings similar to my own small l libertarian leanings. I'll listen to fiscal conservatives who need to be heard. I'll listen to true moderates. I'll listen to some liberal republicans, as well as evangelicals.

But screw Milliken. He endorsed Granholm and John Kerry. Granholm! He OWNS this screw up as much as anyone else who voted for her. And John Kerry? He was until Obama, one of the biggest leftists ever to run for president. Milliken is no Republican. He's to the left of most democrats I know. He supports high taxes, high spending, abortion on demand, gun grabs, and everything else doctrine leftists support.

Screw him. I'd vote for Granholm over Milliken.

As far as the moving to the right, anyone who thinks the party moved right has his head up his rear end - like Milliken did when he was governor. I'm a post-Headlee Republican.
