Granholm: Politics, Pressure and a Pfizer ScientistBy Shell, Section News
It seems that Granholm is talking out of both sides of her mouth again and working on a third.
When Pfizer decided to close up shop in Ann Arbor, Granholm publically promised loan money to help out-of-work scientists start up their own businesses here in Michigan. Earlier this year, $8 million for a Pfizer Asset Retention Fund was approved to help scientists like Dan Ross and Cheryl Quinn start their own biotech company in Napoleon. Now, however, Granholm has decided to use the funds as a biotech weapon against the GOP.
The Jackson CitPat is reporting that Granholm has decided to put the money on hold until the crisis surrounding the 2008 budget is solved.
Boyd said Granholm believes the project is important and that the Pfizer money is not anticipated to be put to other use, but that the $1.8 billion hole in the '08 budget needs to be fixed first.
"The clock is ticking," she said. "We need to put our fiscal house in order first." In other words, Granholm decided to hold the money hostage in order to put pressure on the GOP to fix the budget, which in Granholm-speak is just another phrase for "raise taxes."
