    Getting Lies from Governor Granholm

I'm a Grand Rapids guy, born and raised, which is a great thing 99.9999 percent of the time.  Unfortunately, every once and a while the Governor remembers we exist over here in GR and makes an appearance on local WOOD radio.  And thus an hour of my life is wasted pounding my head repeatedly and forcefully against the wall.

Jennifer Granhom spent the six o'clock hour this evening taking "listeners' phone calls" on our big news talk station.  Which is usually code for "the governor spoke breathlessly to star-struck wannabe progressives her office managed to plant on the phone lines."  A truly painful experience.

But today's radio escapade was a little different than the Governor is used to.

    Read on...

Granholm's big press effort today was to paint Republicans as anti-child because of the President's SCHIP veto.  The first caller of the day, Kathy, says she wants to talk about SCHIP and immediately I said "here we go again."  Boy was I wrong.

What followed was a passionate defense of conservative standards, lowered government spending and a defense of the unborn.  She called Granholm's insistence that Republicans don't care "crap" and closed her phone call by stating "you are ruining our state!"

Kathy, well done.  Speak the truth, sister!

Granholm's response... liberal tripe, liberal tripe, liberal tripe, it's all for the children, liberal tripe, oh, and if you don't like spending then get out of Iraq.  Classic.

Then came the plants.  "Bob" from Holland called specifically to attack Mike Bishop and to offer his support for higher taxes.  Thanks, Bob, but don't volunteer my cash for me, OK?

Email and calls covered everything from the Governor's $116+ million no-bid contract to a major campaign contributor to questions about why she'd cut police and fire when she should be reforming welfare instead.  This session was different from so many others because it was clear right from the outset that Michigan voters are ticked to high heck and they don't very much feel like taking it anymore.

Didn't take long before I was banging my head against the wall, true to form.  The problem with these types of programs is that a very capable caller gets fifteen seconds to ask a very pointed question and then the Governor gets to babble on and on with lie after lie after they're off the air, unable to respond.

And I love our local radio news jocks but they're no Frank Beckmann and they're not Capitol corp reporters.  In other words, she lies and lies and gets a free pass.  No follow-up from the callers.  No follow-up from the hosts.  So you're left with an hour long infomercial for the Govenror's talking points.

"I cut the budget."  Lie.  Absolutely practically, philosophically and mathematically untrue.

"I've cut spending."  Lie.  Absolutely practically, philosophically and mathematically untrue.

"It was Engler's fault."  Lie.  Absolutely practically, well, you get the idea.

But the callers weren't buying it.  "Jeff" called in and reminded the Governor that her first state of the state speech asked residents to "move with me" then stated that the only place we're moving is "down the tubes."  Emailers wrote in to express their outrage about the massive Democrat tax hikes.  Others reminded the Gov that it was Democrats who pushed through and signed NAFTA.

Even during a call about illegal immigrants the caller tagged the governor on raising taxes.

One other note... something that keeps popping up.  The Governor like all of the other Democrats in Michigan are claiming that the Democrat POTUS candidates are being "held hostage" by New Hampshire and Iowa.  That New Hampshire and Iowa somehow are keeping them from asking for Michigan votes.

That's a crafty bit of spin and it's 100% untrue.  The Democrat POTUS candidates are CHOOSING not to come to Michigan at the behest of the Democrat National Committee.  Democrats asking democrats not to give a rip about Michigan and Democrats including Hillary Clinton CHOOSING not to come to Michigan.

No one is holding anyone hostage.  No one has a gun to anyone's head.  No one has the candidate's cooped up in a prison cell or a dank dark basement.

    How are these numbers possible?

Do you approve or disapprove of Governor Jennifer Granholm's job performance?
    Approve 47%
    Disapprove 41%
    Undecided 12%

This from a new Strategic Vision poll conducted October 5-7 of 1,200 likely voters in Michigan.

Clearly, the Republicans are doing a terrible job getting the message out that Mrs. Granholm just raised their taxes substantially.  Maybe once the bigger bite comes out of their next paychecks their attitudes might change.

The results of this poll are depressing at best.

Vladimir Lenin was once a popular guy in Russia, too.  The fact of the matter is that despite all the tens of millions of dollars spent by the neo-communist propagandists in the Michigan Democrat party and after five years in the bully pulpit, less than half the citizens of Michigan approve of Comrade Granholm's performace as governor of the Soviet Socialist Republic of Michigan.  It's time to recall this sorry excuse of a governor!

Let's put the lie to bed already:

    GF Appropriations:

    2001-02 9,189.3
    2002-03 8,830.9
    2003-04 8,770.1
    2004-05 8,702.8
    2005-06 9,106.3
    2006-07 9,105.9

The last complete term Engler budget was 2001-02. The 2002-03 budget was started under Engler and finished under Granholm. The General Fund appropriations have gone down every year but one and are still less than what Engler spent in 2001-02.

I know that I'll hear all about how the total budget has gone up since 2001. That's entirely due to school aid and federal funding, both of which are restricted in how they can be spent. The only way for those numbers to have gone down would have been to spend LESS on schools and REFUSED federal funding. Are the same people who claim that Republicans don't cut money for schools and insist that we get more money from Washington now going to attempt to argue that we do the opposite?

Where is the $3 or $4 billion in cuts? (none / 0) (#6)

Even if we accept your argument that there is nothing she could do to keep the budget from growing because of schools, federal mandates, etc., she continues to say she has cut billions from the budget.  Where was that done?  It obviously wasn't from the General Fund.

If, using your argument, we are able to use only the GF/GP, then she has been lying like a rug.

what she cut?  Midnight basketball?  The weight room hours at the capital?  Prehaps the dermatology mole treatments?  Can someone answer this question with titles and the percentage cut?
