    Welcome to Scoop!

To help you figure things out, there is a Scoop Admin Guide which can hopefully answer most of your questions.

    Some tips:

    • Most of the layout is changed in "Blocks", found in the admin tools menu
    • Features can be turned on and off, and configured, in "Site Controls" in the admin tools menu
    • Stories have an "edit" link right beside the "Full Story" link on an index page, and right beside the "Post a Comment" link on the full story page. They can also be edited by clicking the story title in the "Story List" admin tool
    • Boxes are what allow you to write new features for Scoop; they require a knowledge of the perl programming language to work with effectively, although you can often make small changes without knowing much perl. If you would like a feature added but cannot program it yourself, ScoopHost does custom Scoop programming as one of its services.
    • If you aren't sure where to look for a particular feature or piece of display, try the "Search Admin Tools" link in the admin tools menu.

Seriously, its time to make an attitude adjustment in DC.

Someone says its time to dump Upton:

"In 1986, Upton primaried a sitting Republican by running to that man's left.  He has been running to the left field foul line ever since.  Now it's time to return the favor."
    CD6, its upton you.

OK  Cheezy name pun aside, let the dumping begin.

A Message To Our Legislators - Beware False Choices

Hoogendyk Slams Upton Slush Fund Vote

Congressional candidate Jack Hoogendyk has called Congressman Fred Upton out for supporting a huge stimulus program at the federal level. On May 9, Congress voted on amendments to H.R. 5326, an appropriation bill for the Justice and Commerce Departments. Amendments were offered to make cuts to the total appropriation of nearly $53 billion.

As written by Daniel Horowitz from the Madison Project, "The most important amendment that has been proposed so far is Mike Pompeo's amendment #37 to abolish the Economic Development Administration (EDA). The EDA is a failed Great Society program that serves as a stimulus/pork slush fund for special interest communities under the guise of assistance to economically distressed areas of the country. It's nothing more than a fund for corporate welfare and a way of picking winners and losers in the market. It has been as successful in creating jobs as Obama's stimulus." This amendment would have saved $3 billion in wasteful "stimulus" spending over ten years.

    Unfortunately, the amendment failed.

All Democrats and 104 Republicans voted against the amendment. Included in that number was Congressman Fred Upton, who has lately been telling his constituents back home that he is opposed to stimulus spending and bloated budgets. "Voting against this amendment is hypocrisy on his part. I can only assume he thought nobody would find out," stated Hoogendyk.

"The Pompeo amendment is just one example of how Congress and Fred Upton can make meaningful cuts, one at a time, to reduce the size of the federal budget which is in serious need of reduction," he continued. Upton voted wrong on several other amendments that would have saved a total of over $8 billion in the coming year.

"It's in the amendment process that government can be reduced," said Hoogendyk. "Now is the time for courage and action."

    Reelecting Fred Upton is Laughable

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me! Fool the electorate for a 14th time? That's insufferable! I've heard Fred Upton's ads on talk radio and have some questions for him, obvious to me, but perhaps not to those who he's charmed, intimidated, or made-to-feel important. Since Fred and his zombies disallow anyone to question him in public, I will do it here.

No Question - Its Jack Hoogendyk

Part of the trouble with selecting the right candidates for elective office, is that it seems like those who are electable become too easily swayed by establishment habits, either shortly before or after taking office.

We have talked about candidates we prefer on RightMichigan.com often.  And generally the endorsements will be far in between, and few. In fact, personal affirmations of course will be the only way you might see a favorite endorsed for office anyhow.  So before we move along too far into the election season, I want to let you know we DO have friends who we can trust to send to Washington.

One of them is Jack Hoogendyk.  I personally endorse him for the Michigan 6th District.

Go below the fold for why.

Fred Upton Not a Career Politician?

Congressman Fred Upton made a rather astounding claim on the radio today.

Southwest Michigan Politics: Congressman Fred Upton says he's not a career politician; Jack Hoogendyk gets endorsements

UPTON ON THE RADIO: Upton was on The Rocker Morning Show on WRKR-FM 107.7 today, and amid jesting with the hosts, talked about what's coming up in Washington D.C. for him and the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, which he chairs.

At the end of the interview, co-host Mike McKelly told Upton, "I don't consider you a career politician." Upton responded, "I'm not."

Upton, 58, served his first year in Congress in 1987 and has been in office for 25 years. Before that, he worked on the staff for U.S. Rep. David Stockman from 1976 to 1980 and was in the Office of Management and Budget from 1981 to 1985.

The Mlive commenters aren't buying it.

According to Wikipedia, the only work Upton has done that is even close to the private sector is writing for his college newspaper.

If Upton isn't a career politician, what is his career?  Rich inheritor?  OMB staffer on a really long break?

Jack Hoogendyk Considers a Second Challenge to Fred Upton

Former State Rep. Jack Hoogendyk is considering challenging Congressman Fred Upton in the Republican primary for a second time.

Jack Hoogendyk says he is considering run against Fred Upton in 2012 Republican primary

Jack challenged Upton in 2010 and scored 43%, which greatly exceeded expectations.  Upton has a long history of nonconservative votes and scores only 72% conservative according to the American Conservative Union.

Jack got essentially no help from national conservative groups in 2010. This is particularly ironic given the furor that erupted among national conservative groups a few months later when he was up for the chairmanship of the Energy and Commerce Committee.

This year, the Club for Growth is considering supporting Jack Hoogendyk in another bid against Fred Upton.  I suspect this a warning to Upton not to support any bad deals on the Supercommittee.  It remains to be seen whether they will actually support Jack.

Club for Growth Encouraging Upton Primary Challenger

The Club for Growth is considering supporting a primary challenge to Rep. Fred Upton (R-Mich.) next year.

Club spokesman Barney Keller said the conservative organization is "impressed" with former state Rep. Jack Hoogendyk, who is considering challenging Upton for a second time in 2012.

"The club met with Hoogendyk today and came away impressed," Keller said. "We're taking a look at the race."
