Who are the NERD fund donors Mr Snyder?

    Raise the curtain.

    Its Fracking COLD UP There!

The upper peninsula is really not that far away from some of the largest supplies of natural gas, yet it has an emergency.

Enough so, that the Governor has signed an "emergency order" that lifts certain restrictions on propane delivery and transportation of propane only.  Cold winter and reliance on a single pipeline from out of state has put Upper Peninsula residents at risk, and the solution will be 'emergency measures.'

    As usual:

"Gov. Rick Snyder today issued Executive Order 2013-11, declaring a State of Energy Emergency in Michigan due to temporary shortages of propane in areas of the Upper Peninsula.

"Michiganders and those visiting the Upper Peninsula who rely on propane for heat and other uses are in our thoughts," said Snyder. "This executive order will help make sure that there is enough supply in the coming days and weeks until problems are resolved."

Long term solutions however, are not being considered.

With Michigan's several trillion cubic feet of KNOWN reserves, the question might be asked: "Why is Michigan at the end of a pipeline?"

    ...than just housekeeping.

About a dozen states (that I'm aware of anyway) have made similar proclamations.

The regs make exceptions during this time of the year (and also during hurricanes and other natural disasters) when we can just throw our log book out the window and drive without having to worry about that nonsense.

OABTW, you can blame people like my non-representing representative for that pipeline problem.

Normally with a "republican" controlled legislature, fluff bills like those should go straight from the hopper into the trash can.

But given that they have gone off an drank the kool aid on issues as near and dear to democrats like Obamacare, I'm not so sure anymore.

Infrastructure is the big issue (none / 0) (#3)

Even if you frack for NG in the UP, that still doesn't get it to the residents because there is no underground distribution system that you have in urban areas.

Outside of its initial high cost, I have thought that geothermal heating/cooling or wood stoves made sense for rural areas because you were not dependent on fuel delivery as much.  But regardless of type of heating, you always have some weak links... propane/NG distribution or electricity for operation... to deal with.

Since we have NG available and electrical outages are common [lost power the other day from an ice storm] we have a 20kw NG generator that picks up the load and keeps everything running.
