I said no to fireworks on the fourth.

As a county commissioner, last year I voted with the prevailing side for Grand Traverse County to NOT contribute funds to the local fireworks displays on independence day.  While a couple of those who wanted to do so cried "unpatriotic", the decision was that we would not use taxpayer funds for the light and noise show so often associated with July 4 activities.

    It really wasn't that difficult.

Don't get me wrong.  I like fireworks too.  and of course the cost was minimal.  A few thousand dollars to help subsidize an operation that had been somewhat disrupted by a change in a local veterans organization that was till then handling the project's financials, doesn't seem like a great burden.  However, added to it were the contributions from local townships, and other govt agencies, all of which must first take from the citizens by force, to make such generous entertainment available.   The local non profit which brought it before our board, had considerable means to make its own contributions, yet had not even pledged a single penny to the affair at that point.

Why bother when government will foot the bill, right?  The taxpayers will be only paying pennies.  What great entertainment!  Caesar, keep us happy!!!

Next thing we might be funding would be large venue amphitheaters with large carnivore elements.

In the end however, some business owners (along with a few of those govt agencies) decided to step up to the plate.  Sponsorships rolled in, and July 4th festivities were saved!

Imagine that. (continued below the fold)

236 years ago today, thirteen colonies declared certain rights as absolutes.  Neither given, nor revocable; Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of happiness (tangible ownership) were declared to be the providence of our maker.  We were endowed with, and retain these rights until death, as only our creator might take them from us.   It was made clear that no man nor the laws of man may rightfully annex those natural laws.  It guaranteed individuals dominion over their own affairs, as long as they would not encroach on others' rights in managing those affairs.

Frankly it was brilliant then, as it would be now.

If .. the scholars who pretend to represent us would abide by that brilliance.

They (our founders) paid for their declaration of truth in the blood of fathers and sons and brothers.

The irony of the United States' Supreme Court decision on the ACA (Obamacare) happening just before this day we celebrate as a 'free people' should not be lost.

The SCOTUS has done this nation a severe wrong.  It has upheld as agreeable to our 225 year old constitution, a most significant taking of our personal liberties.

In our own state, even the so called Republican governor has been chomping at the bit to enforce ways in which we will contract for our own personal care.  Ways that profit certain agencies, and allow greater control by government over our personal liberty with regard to our health care choices.  A chipping away at an already eroded base of freedom further added to by new rules, new requirements, and further complications of our daily affairs.

If there was ever a time to reflect on what we have lost, even within just the past few days, it is today.

Enjoy your hotdogs, your barbecue, parades, fireworks etc.  Ponder the wonders built on the agony endured in creating this wonderful nation, and the sacrifices made to protect the rights we have just seen slither away with a few pen strokes.

Understand we still own those rights. They are ours, as our founders declared to be self evident.  But our defenders, our leaders, it seems, have forgotten their responsibilities.  Its not about entertaining the masses.  Nor is it providing all that is necessary for one to enjoy the same lifestyle as another. Nor is it to create schemes that intervene in our own personal affairs:

"Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security."
I will leave you to determine from where this might have come.

Elections are upon us.  Tomorrow, start looking about you for those new stalwarts, new leaders, and accept no vacillation.  Demand that they hold true to the principles that crafted the greatest nation on the face of the planet.  Then give them the support, the tools, the courage to restore it.

Stay sober today.  A hangover tomorrow won't help this happen.

    Happy Independence.

Has always been my fav.  That, and the comfort that there are some 15 million registered hunters in the good 'ol U.S. of A.

Heh!  Even with my never failing 80/20 rule of thumb being applied to the herd... that makes for 3,000,000 dedicated Patriots on guard and ever vigilant.

    Happy 4th everyone!

    often that's all it takes.

In the old west the nativehyphenamericans were known to drive buffalo herds off of cliffs to more easily harvest them. Not every buffalo ran with the herd to their long term advantage.

A mandate that I can get behind:

Willard, the '07 'varmint hunter' who lied about ownership, and just now bought two shotguns, has to be sh!tting his gun grabbing bricks to hear that said by West as 'ol Mandate Mitt tries wooing TEA folk into voting for him.
