Michigan 6: Fred Upton vs. Jack Hoogendyk

The Republican U.S. House primary in Michigan's 6th District is gaining some attention, with former State Representative Jack Hoogendyk challenging Congressman Fred Upton.  The Washington Post highlighted this primary as one to watch and columns promoting Jack Hoogendyk have been published on Red State and Right Michigan.  Jack Hoogendyk and some of his allies are trying to make the case that he is the next Richard Mourdock, the conservative who defeated Senator Richard Lugar in Indiana, but Jack Hoogendyk is no consistent conservative and his campaign has been a disaster.

Jack Hoogendyk talks a good conservative game, but his record tells a different story.  Hoogendyk voted for a billion dollar stimulus touted by Democrat Governor Jennifer Granholm that would let a board of bureaucrats' handout our money to the corporations and special projects of their choosing.  According to the highly respected Mackinac Center for Public Policy, this bill authorized government ownership of private businesses.  Hoogendyk voted twice for higher property taxes, six times for Granholm's revenue enhancements and a gas tax increase.  He voted dozens of times for failed Hollywood subsidies and for a full variety of green energy subsidies.  In the State House, Hoogendyk was one of a handful of members to vote against stronger punishments for extremely drunk drivers (the 1% who cause 50% of the alcohol-related traffic fatalities) and against a voluntary email notification so families could know when a convicted sex offender moved into their neighborhood.

As for Jack Hoogendyk's campaign, he personally has made two huge blunders that were recently revealed.  First, Jack Hoogendyk, who is the treasurer of his own campaign, failed to report almost half his campaign spending in his first quarter report to the Federal Election Commission.  Once he was caught, he filed multiple amendments to correct the supposed oversight, but his cash on hand figure is down to $39,000.  Second, Jack Hoogendyk personally was collecting petition signatures to get on the ballot, but he was caught turning in signatures he claimed to collect on a day he was actually in Washington D.C.  After days of questions, Hoogendyk's campaign manager admitted Jack Hoogendyk signed multiple petitions as the circulator when he was not the circulator.  We are waiting to see if law enforcement will be investigating this matter.

Those of us who closely observe southwest Michigan politics know these facts about Jack Hoogendyk's record and campaign tactics, and you deserve to know as well so you don't waste your time and resources for a candidate like him.

The incumbent, Fred Upton, Chairman of the Energy and Commerce Committee, is leading the effort to repeal Obamacare, as a whole and piece-by-piece.  Fred Upton has been a thorn in the side of the President's EPA bureaucrats and he is effectively fighting to stop `cap and trade' energy taxes and thwart these anti-free market and anti-business regulators.  He is voting repeatedly for trillions in spending cuts, opposing tax hikes and relentlessly pushing the Keystone Pipeline and more American energy production.  It seems to me that conservatives should be praising Fred Upton for his excellent work advancing the cause and tenaciously challenging the Obama Administration instead of digging up old votes to try to justify going after him.  The voters in Michigan's 6th District agree, as a recent poll commissioned by the highly respected publication "Inside Michigan Politics" showed Fred Upton leading 74% to 26% over Hoogendyk.  My prediction is that Fred Upton wins handily because he is doing the job of fighting for economic growth, less government, more freedom and opportunity for all while many here view Jack Hoogendyk as an extremely flawed and inconsistent career candidate just looking for a new title and a job.

    ...heard from.

Nothing about Fred receiving $19M in Porkulus monies for Whirlpool that immediately relocated to Mexico.  Time for Upton to go.  Even if it only means tossing his treacherous ass out to break his career minded vision of The Peoples House, Fred needs to go.

OABTW, nice picture with T-Paw, kid.

Nothing like a government class to make you an expert.

I wonder how much of the "facts" presented were spoon fed to you.  In fact none of the "reporting" you present here has any backing facts.  Where are the links?  Where is supporting documentation? Proof?

So while you are digging that out, lets talk about FRED.

    ..

The EPA could have been dismantled along the way by MR Upton in nearly any one of his prior terms.  The Congress could have de-funded the EPA, which now has incredible destructive power over our lives. Thorns suck, but an axe frenzy to all that supports the EPA would be more apropos.

And MR Upton banned the incandescent light bulb.  Chasing away the last of the bulb factories in the country.  Can you say hello Chinese curlycue?

He voted to enhance harvesting of the unborn for research before Bush vetoed the bill. He voted again to try to overturn the veto.

He voted for TARP.  Take OUR Money, give it to other people. Check.

He voted to continue funding other nations who used the funds to fund abortion. Check.

He voted to fatten the UAW by giving in to the GM bailout, providing the basis for Obama's later actions.  And do NOT tell me it was necessary.  A bankruptcy was in order, and would have been healthier an outcome.

He voted to allow our debt to increase.

Look, there have been good votes in Upton's record, but is he a stalwart?

Two issues of litmus for me:

    Life, and Property.

He isn't so good there, ok?

The last paragraph says it all for me. Obviously full of Upton hype, this author should beware of his glass house with those accusations of "career politician" and "digging up old votes".
As for that campaign hype... Upton paraded through Allegan, "his" new territory, with a little token speach about fighting abortion and the new bill he was proposing. He couldn't give me a bill number. Frankly, the claims here of "being in the forefront of fighting Obamacare" as well as Keystone etc sound like more of the same old blowing smoke in a campaign year. He's had 2 years since the Tea Party Revolution to get his act together, and he still doesn't get it. With his solid conservative record in MI, Hoogendyk gets my vote to prove he can double Upton's conservative rating in DC.
I'm looking to this author to back up his high-flown claims for Upton with some bill numbers and links. While he's at it, he can tell us which higher-ed bills Upton has supported for the past quarter century----with their constitutional justification. You did notice he's representing college students, after all.

Jack would have my vote easily.

Upton voted for BCRA. That's known as McCain-Feingold.

Upton voted for SCHIP. That's a tax increase.

Upton supports embryonic research and "family planning" overseas.

Upton has a mixed record on 2nd Amendment issues at best. His bad votes are supporting 3 day background checks instead of 1. He opposed private sales at gun shows. Can't always count on him.

Jack wouldn't support anything like that.

Looks like one of the Upton trolls ventured over to RightMichigan.

I have dealt with these claims extensively on my blog, with links to the actual votes.  They are based on Upton's smear campaign and opposition research.

The short answer is that most of the votes cited were nearly unanimous, and many were on bills introduced by Republicans.

As for Upton's "conservative" record, see the following.

Upton's strategy is just to use his fundraising haul to smear, smear, smear.  He cannot defend his record.

ICYMI: Conservative Blog, Right Michigan, posts analysis on Sixth District race

What do I mean by this? Is it Jack's supporters responsibility to disprove the claims of a dumbass? No! It's the dumbass' responsibility to prove his own claims. I say, tell him "how about some references to support his claims?" He's in college and doesn't understand the value or purpose of citation?... influencing other students? He's just a muppet for Fred Upton with Liz Garey's had up his ass... Get bent, you PROGRESSIVE COWARD!!

This is incredibly nasty.  I'm not much impressed with Fred Upton's bona fides, but the responses to the above ad offer virtually nothing to contradict the statements against Hoogendyk -- just posters flinging poo at this Pfeifer kid (with Corinthian Scales, as usual, smeared up to his elbows).  Please... debate, not sewage.
Democrats don't have to worry about defeating Republicans in Michigan.  They can just let the half dozen posters remaining here drive everyone else away.
