A young woman who won $1m on a state lottery has sparked outrage after she admitted to still claiming benefits.

Amanda Clayton of Lincoln Park, Michigan still claims $200 a month in food stamps and despite paying cash for a new home and car said, 'I'm still struggling.'

The 24-year-old added that she is entitled to the welfare handout as she has two homes to run.

'I feel that it's okay because I mean, I have no income and I have bills to pay,' she said. 'I have two houses.'

Clayton won the $1 million in October after paying $10 for a series of tickets in the Michigan State Lottery.

She posed proudly with a giant check for the six figure sum and told friends the jackpot would change her life.

Amanda Clayton, a 24-year-old single mother of two...

The natural assumption is that taxpayers are picking up the tab for them too.

Legislation pending in the state Senate could cut off windfall lottery winners from tapping the social welfare system. Two bills were initially filed in response to a Bay County man acknowledging he continued to receive food stamps after winning a $2 million lottery prize in 2010.

"Until the bill's passed, apparently it's legal, and people need to leave her alone," Euline Clayton told The Detroit News.

Jeez, thanks again Modus opeRandy.  It's nice to know that Senate Republicans have been dragging ass since February 22 on HB 5032 & HB 5033.  It's a cut and dried vote.  And isn't grandma Euline just a gem too?

Amanda Clayton would not grant The News an interview and is "stressed out" from the international media attention her use of food stamps has attracted, Euline Clayton said.

"I'm not saying it's the right thing to do," Euline Clayton said of her daughter's use of food stamps. "But it's nobody's business if she's not breaking the law."

What a miserable failure of a mother.  Totally bankrupt, both ethically and morally.

No amount of money can buy or fix that.

And just think how many billions of dollars has been spent on the poor in the last 3 decades and the problem has only gotten worse.  I wish we could abolish all government welfare.  Watch how fast these idiots would find work and be taken in by family members.  WTH did people do before welfare?  I have not heard thru our history of thousands of people starving to death in the streets because they weren't getting government hand outs.

Clayton might have violated a state law requiring food stamp recipients to report changes to their income and assets within 10 days to the Michigan Department of Human Services.

"The person in question hasn't been eligible for a long time," said Dave Akerly, spokesman for the Michigan Department of Human Services.

A statement issued Wednesday evening from DHS Director Maura Corrigan said Clayton is "now no longer receiving benefits."

"DHS relies on clients being forthcoming about their actual financial status," Corrigan said. "If they are not, and continue to accept benefits, they may face criminal investigation and be required to pay back those benefits."

There.  I reckon that makes grandma Euline Clayton now fully aware that Bridge Card abuse is "taxpayers business".  I just can't imagine sitting with a half million in cash on hand since October, and still screwing taxpayers out of $200/month.  No conscience.  Obscene Occupy mentality. That's the greed of "the poor" that nobody in the MSM will touch with a ten foot pole.

Glad to finally have a responsive DHS Director.

    Thanks Maura!
