Support Expiration of the Wind Production Tax CreditBy windptc, Section News
The wind Production Tax Credit is a drain on our resources. Congress should not extend it beyond 2012!
More below the fold
The wind Production Tax Credit (PTC) is expiring at the end of 2012 unless Congress extends it. This tax subsidy to develop wind turbines for energy has been in place for 20 years. Did you know we have paid more than $20 billion in this time? It's already going to cost us another $10 billion for existing wind projects whether Congress extends it or not. The US Energy Information Administration said that for FY 2010, the wind industry received $52.48/mWh generated while coal only received $0.64/mWh. How is it fair for the government to pick winners and losers in an industry? The market should decide what is best.
The wind PTC should be left to expire at the end of this year. It has cost us, as taxpayers, billions of dollars without providing any significant benefits. Wind receives 42% of all government energy subsidies while only generating 2.3% of electricity. Even when wind is used, it doesn't blow when it is most needed. Data from the nation's grid operators says that over 84% of wind capacity fails to produce energy when it is most needed.
This kind of unchecked spending is reckless at any time but never more so than now when we are faced with the deficit crisis. The liberals in Washington claim that they want to reduce the deficit but then turn around and will extend this kind of irresponsible spending! Why should Republicans in Congress vote for tax increases on struggling Americans when these kinds of tax credits are still going on? It is time for our conservative members in Congress to stand up against this type of uncontrolled spending. Cong. Camp and even Chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee-Cong. Upton have not said they are opposed to this! We need to tell Camp and Upton they need to stand up for the constituents who elected them and oppose any extension of the wind Production Tax Credit!!!
