Yet another parasite kills its hostess.

    Poof!  Gone.

Livonia-based Awrey Bakeries has filed a federally required notice to the state confirming it plans to shutter its facility and lay off 203 employees in 60 days.
    ...

The company has 157 union employees and 46 non-union workers, according to the notice signed by CEO Bob Wallace, and will "fully and permanently close" during a 14-day period between Jan. 27 and Feb. 9.

Hmmm, a perfect opportunity for Trumka's AFL-CIO, Hoffa's IBT, and King's UAW, to pool their collective goonion dues shakedown monies, and put it where their mouth is with buying Awrey's.

C'mon goonionhood brothers, save an American business for American workers!  /snark

Surprised you didn't pull up your old post with this.

Freedom To Work couldn't come soon enough.

Yeah, we all knew that it was coming. (none / 0) (#3)

It still doesn't make the news of people losing their jobs due to the ineptitude of the people "representing" them any easier.

I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for Hoffa, King and Trumka to put their members dues money where the leadership's mouths are.

Those cushy executive perks are hard to maintain.

What's even more grating is what they are spoon-feeding the members they purportedly serve.

"Joe Silva, president of the United Distributive Workers, Council 30, which represents workers at the Livonia plant, told The Detroit News Wednesday the company has been looking for a new buyer and that Silva believes a sale may come soon."

That's NOT the word on the street I've picked up. I wouldn't bet my paycheck on that one, sport!

The "buyer in the wings" is a tactic often used by unions in their position so that they can continue to hold meetings and interact with their membership, without getting bum-rushed by them (or worse).

Awrey plant pictured there.  The outlet store was a weekly visit.  The place was always busy.

Not sure that the union was the root cause of the problems that Awrey faced.  As more and more local grocery stores added deli and bakery sections, the packaged bakery from Awrey and Hostess took a hit.  People have also become much more conscious of sugar in their diet which I suspect has led to per capita reduction in bakery snacks consumption.

Regardless, the battered economy [no pun intended] and the reluctance of the union to recognized that all or nothing leads to nothing has driven this business to closure.
