Slow down, and don't make excuses for the guv prematurely.
I like to read the view, and enjoy the commentary, even in those times with minor disagreements. Henry Payne and crew are a pretty good pulse check of what is alive in Michigan. In fact, because it is a collaborative affair like RightMichigan.com and doesn't seem to have any crazy lefties on board, I would say the accuracy confidence is high. But once in a while ..
As I was singing along with Dan Calabrese's column (new app for windows - involves show-tune melodies and a bouncy ball) I kept getting a frog stuck sideways when I hit this part: "It's entirely possible that whatever good Snyder's policies do (assuming you believe they are doing good) could be wiped out by the nation's deepening debt and economic stagnation. So yeah, hold on. I insisted Granholm own the mess she left us in, and I will insist that measurable comparisons to states in the rest of the country will be proof that Snyder policies work or not. There must be some ownership. There must be some accountability if things go bad. There must be an accurate assessment of who is responsible for failures AND successes.
A little more below.
Having said that, It seems those things that have been done already,(particularly tax code) will affect the state of Michigan positively in an economic way. And there is still room. We should also glad there is a bit of a check on governor Snyder with regard to the NICT project, an unnecessary and morally wrong undertaking that would happen more naturally if there was truly a competitive reason for it to do so.
If a second bridge is needed, the second span already designed would suit the purpose without complicating an already successful international crossing. To the rest of the piece?
In the View column, Calabrese points out: "I happen to believe that Snyder doesn't care about his popularity. He seems like the kind of guy who ran for the office because he had some things he wanted to do, and he sees his job as doing those things, not being loved. That creates a disconnect between the governor and the political media, because they report his popularity as if it's a measure of his success, when he's not actually trying to achieve popularity. He's just trying to do his job." OK. He is probably correct. However, we may have the legacy of A. The destruction of a privately owned business, and B. A Saddling of Michigan Taxpayers with a project that while "not costing us a dime" has in fact cost over $41,000,000.00 already. It should be squarely embedded upon his reputation NOW, because Snyder won't be around, and we won't be taking that poll in 10-14 years when the fallout from these issues play out.
