The following is an email letter from John LaFond regarding his campaign for U of M Regent.
Greetings Fellow Republicans,
Now that summer is upon us and the Mackinac Leadership conference is fast approaching, I felt it was important to notify you that I have decided not to seek the MiGOP nomination for University of Michigan Regent. I made this decision after consulting with my family, friends and previous campaign advisors who were instrumental in our successful effort to win the nomination in 2008. Two main reasons influenced my decision: current UM responsibilities and family business commitments as summarized below. I remain very active on the UM campus serving with two alumni advisory boards within the College of Engineering and Business School. I have been a voice for conservative ideas that are focused to promote efficiency on campus as well as cost saving measures to improve UM education affordability. In addition, efforts are being made to help students remain in the State of Michigan following graduation where they can begin their careers and families. Also, the press of family business precludes me from launching a "full court press" to win the election in 2012. I know you would expect nothing less from me to warrant your support. A number of candidates have expressed an interest in becoming UM Regent. At this point, I am endorsing Dan Horning. Dan has a solid background of conservative leadership as a UM Regent from 1995-2002. I have talked to Dan about his plans for the future and I encourage you to do the same. I plan to remain active within the 11th District and the Wayne 11th to support local candidates. Also, I will be strongly supporting the MiGOP to defeat Barack Obama and Debbie Stabenow. I hope all of you observed Independence Day in your special way with family and friends. This unique American holiday reminds us of the price that has been paid for the freedoms we enjoy. We, as true conservative Republicans must be a persistent voice for individual responsibility, limited government, a strong defense of the our Constitution and an enduring respect for all that we celebrate on July 4th! I hope to see many of you in the coming months and appreciate your past support and continued encouragement. GO BLUE ! John LaFond
