    MICHIGAN FAITH & FREEDOM COALITION

MICHIGAN GOP PRESIDENTIAL SELECTION TOWN HALLS

Concerned Citizens, MI GOP State Committee Members & Grassroots Activists Invited to Voice Opinion in a Transparent Series of Forums

The Michigan Republican Party's State Committee is scheduled to choose a method of selecting the Republican Presidential Nominee for Michigan on Saturday, August 13, 2011.  Additionally, the Michigan GOP's State Committee's Policy Committee is slated to make a decision on Tuesday, July 12th.  Their vote will recommend to the full State Committee which process should be followed in Michigan regarding selecting the GOP's nominee by Michigan Republicans and possibly the general public.  However, many feel that we have not yet had an open and transparent process to solicit the opinions of grassroots activists and concerned Republicans across the state.  Please join us as we have an open discussion about the options to determine the next GOP Presidential nominee.  We have invited elected Michigan Republican State Committee Members, party leaders, grassroots activists and concerned citizens to listen to each other so that the Michigan Republican State Committee can make an informed decision on this critical topic for our important state and nation.

    More Below

    Options on the table are:

    • An open primary

    •
    • A closed (party registered voters only) primary

    •
    • A party caucus (either with identified party activists or open to the general public)

    •
    • A caucus-convention with existing Republican Delegates to County Convention (with or without a preference for elected delegates to be chosen first to go to state convention)

    •
    • A "firehouse" caucus where party members and possibly the general public vote at firehouses and other buildings across the state on a date certain (similar to Iowa's caucus system)

Additionally, the Michigan Republican Party's State Committee will decide if Michigan should go "early" to be relevant (Florida has a primary election in early February and that state's primary seemed to end the nomination contest in 2008) or should we take the approach that later may be better in this cycle.

. . . of the Kent County event, I can tell you that the overwhelming opinion was that whatever method is used must be one that is as contamination-proof as possible without being unnecessarily vulnerable to establishment manipulation.

The preferred method (after 2-1/2 hours of discussion) was the plan as laid out on MI Caucus for Victory 2012.  The backup choice was simultaneous county conventions.

I'd be interested to hear what actual, effective difference there would be between an open and a closed primary.
