I could have predicted this.
The very thing some of you have spoken to, is being used by the lefties in Lansing (the protesters) as an accompanying argument for the EFM legislation. The last gasp of government labor organizations is being seen occupying the state capitol chanting the programmed union slogans, and carrying the pre-printed paraphernalia supporting a free lunch, or compulsory unionization causes. Loud and impolite as always, they recognize that their small issue though enough to rally them forward, is not sufficient for the needed sympathy from Michigan voters. So they are going to play the "Snyder is taxing old people" angles. And it may serve them well.
Just remember there is a lot of ground to cover before we are even close to straightening out the state's finances. Even with a budget of over 40 Billion dollars, Michigan has the ability to control only a small part of it. And while the apparent tax raising on the pensions is not where most of us want to go, the Snyder administration is looking at the overall fairness it see as lacking in the distribution of burden.
I want taxes to be reduced. You guys do too. we want a fair tax process. He has a tough road to travel to get there if he wants one too.
A post on his facebook page today: "Why should a family of four with an income of $50,000 have to pay state income taxes, while a retired couple with an income of $65,000 does not?" to which, we MUST ask: "how much of that was from after tax money?" But even while we are asking our question, filling in the gaps of falling revenues will require that those revenues must come from somewhere. A "somewhere" that has a largely growing demographic percentage-wise, and probably seems like low hanging fruit. The numbers say the senior population is growing in Michigan. Partly because the state is losing its younger more mobile population, and partly because the state is one of a few that has had exemptions on this particular type of taxing. And the unions, as the left often does, has been seeking out willing allies for these ventures into Lansing. They NEED the dissent from the faces of those who have populated tea party rallies in the past toward Snyder policies. In all likelihood, organizers recognize working with pensioneers in tandem with the calls for action against the EFM legislation, could partially derail the reinvention that Snyder would like.
Given his signing of the EFM legislation today, I suspect it will get a little more interesting in Lansing soon. With potentially 100 municipalities rumored to be in trouble this year, I'm sure glad I'm not working for one. From the Ivory tower: "State Treasurer Andy Dillon has said he expects a large number of local governments to face insolvency in the coming year, and that the state must prepare to deal with them. oh.. wait. Stay tuned.
