Relativity has become an art form.  At what point in the development of our culture did we accept a city as fouled as Detroit as one that is even remotely civilized?  From the Ivory tower in an article celebrating the decline of homicides:

There were an unofficial 308 homicides in the city last year, Detroit police announced Monday, a decline of more than 15% from the 364 in 2009. The city's highest homicide number was 714 deaths in 1974, the almanac said.

Never mind the fact any visitor would be still tripping over the bodies in what could be known as Baghdad West.

In addition, nonfatal shootings in Detroit decreased 10.5% last year from 1,307 to 1,170 in 2010, police said.

Cool..  safe to send the 8 year old out for a gallon of milk again.  "Oh wait Honey, here are your galoshes, cause I wouldn't want you to catch cold..  oh and don't forget to put on the flak jacket and combat helmet!" And if you were actually raised in this state, or if you have been here for any length of time, somehow you can actually visualize it. And that is not strange. It seems to be 'par for the course.'

That seems to be the way everything is now.  Politics are no different.

There are many of you in this community who take their words and turn them into deeds locally.  Hopefully it is to fight the onslaught of new oppression many ambitious local administrators and officials seem to serve up daily.  There is no shortage of ideas in any community, and even when the dollars are being chased for the necessary tasks and getting harder to find, there are folks who would like to have government replace some privately run function anyhow.

You have your work cut out for you.

Worse yet, there are the nickel and dimers that beat a community over the head with things like sign ordinances that charge such things as a separate fee for each side of a sign you place, will tell you how large that sign can be, how deep the posts must be, how close to the road, or if you can have one at all, on your commercially zoned property.  This just an example of course, of a single issue I have witnessed locally, that apparently exists in many communities around the state.

Some of these folks will tell you they have a budget surplus and be proud of it too. And somehow, that is a good thing?

Signs, control over us, wage laws, limits on our movements or activities..

Indeed, the point we have become used to as normalcy is theft by official decree, and like having to lift our legs a little higher to navigate the sea of dead bodies in a city that has been lost for too many decades.  Our normalcy training includes the ongoing progressive state where no one man can freely contract with another for wages that are just, or appropriate, and requires the blessing of a government which is neither.  It accepts mandatory activity assigned by those who often cannot maintain the most basic decency in their own lives or live by the rules they prescribe.

And all of this considered to be an improvement of the last several decades, for the politically correct, as progressive goals attained, and for 'decency.'

Ah, the fun with Detroit and... (none / 0) (#1)

...numbers.  I just love the liberal rags' headline and the journalistic malpractice by their staff writers.

Detroit murders fall to lowest level since 1967

Really?  Holy crap!  That sorta looks like progress for the Cesspool of Detroit.  I mean Detroit has lowered its murder rate to levels that occurred when "Burn, Baby Burn!" was being chanted and Guv Romney had the National Guard containing a 12th Street war zone and Belle Isle was used as a detention center.

Hmmmmm, the numbers, eh?  The 308 murders echoing back to '67 is the accomplishment that is boasted by Detroit, right?  This will prolly be a hoot...

    City of Detroit

    1967 population - 1,600,000est.
    2010 population - 772,419

That's a 51.41% decrease in population for the City of Detroit to enjoy a murder rate of 43 years ago.

There were an unofficial 308 homicides in the city last year, Detroit police announced Monday, a decline of more than 15% from the 364 in 2009. The city's highest homicide number was 714 deaths in 1974, the almanac said.

In addition, nonfatal shootings in Detroit decreased 10.5% last year from 1,307 to 1,170 in 2010, police said.

Wow - a 15% decrease in a year.  Amazing.  Detroit, you've come a long way baby.

Mmmmmmmm, only if one is a gullible fool.  See, if accounting for the population decline since 1967, and the same murder figure, the numbers will tell you that you have a 107% increased chance of being murdered in Detroit today.

1967 Detroit?  Yah, that marked the year that my family immediately moved from the city and a few short years later, moved the family business to Oakland County too.

Perhaps, the LibTard writers and editors at the freep.com should learn context or have chosen a different headline...

Regarding "revelations", I found this article by the Freep's Editor a little surprising (to say the least)!

Even acknowledging that Laffer may be right all along!

Whoa, I nearly sprayed my mocha-mocha carmel froo-froo blend something that tried to pass itself off as coffee all over my computer when I read that.

do what ever the hell they want because since Monica Conyers told me I am the "wrong" color, I have not stepped foot inside the D.

The only thing good that could happen to that city is for it to fall into the river never to be heard from again.

At my new job, one of the terms that we use around the office is "Detroit".

    Detroit (verb)-
    "To destroy something"

No joke. Came from a customers ticket thanking us for "detroiting his biz"
