    Hope on Graduation Day

Part of my job description as a School Board Trustee is attending Graduation and handing out diplomas.

As someone who is not a big fan of public education, it is weird sitting and observing this ritual, as I have done the past three years.  I bet we all can remember our graduation day clearly, I know I can.  But I am a bit of a cynic when it comes to the current public education system.  Today though, my cynicism took a backseat to hope as I listened to the Valedictorian give his speech.

    Fellow Graduates......

Despite a few raindrops, it was a beautiful day for a Graduation.  Generations of families converged on the football stadium and streamed the stands.  Students in dark green looked optimistic, and a bit scared -as if they were trying to understand the meaning of this rite of passage.  Parents doted on their kids, so proud of their yellow cords and academic medals.  Other parents whooped and hollered, thrilled just to see their kid graduate at all.

When the Valedictorian got up to speak, I was ready to hear they typical graduation speech.   But that wasn't what happened. This young man talked about Jesus, free market capitalism, and making money.

He told the students that they should go, "make a bunch of money." He also told them that searching for the stars is great, "but you will need a big down payment on a fancy telescope."   He talked about helping our country by giving people jobs. He talked about the value of capitalism.  He was funny, smart and his speech filled my heart with hope.

I didn't get the impression he was all that into hoarding money; but he was into free market capitalism. In his funny way, he was giving students real advice about the country we live in and where they are headed.

This was so refreshing.  They say that liberty is one generation away form being lost.  As long as I know there are young people out there who understand its value and are willing to speak so clearly and passionately in its favor, all is not lost.

Like he said in his closing, life is not fair.  If it was, he said, we would not be living in America, with the opportunities we have. He is right.

So for him and all the rest of the free market, liberty loving graduates- Congratulations!  Go forth. Learn to be leaders.  Ignore the socialism pushers teaching your college classes.  Love life, fight for liberty and pursue happiness!

    Congratulations Graduates!

how this graduate was able to see through the fog of socialism that is pumped into his life by so many government institutions.

His parents? A special teacher? Something he read?

Someone made a difference for this young man. Who will you make a difference for?

    Probably these folks... (none / 0) (#4)

I strongly suspect the young man got his conservative, free-market-loving bent from his parents.  Maybe his grandparents, or perhaps a special teacher who impacted his life.  Typically, though, at that age it's the parents.  So thanks to our anonymous parents!

In a vast universe of vacant-eyed, slack-jawed, dumbed-down kids there are a few glittering stars like this young man. Let's hope, pray and assist them in influencing their peers.
