The Obama Machine and 2010By Chad, Section News
Believe it or not, many people outside of the sphere of politics ask for my analysis of current political events. Lately the subject of President Obama has been a hot topic. Folks are mildly freaking out about the breakneck pace he and his Democrat peeps in Congress have been on in the past several months since assuming office. The assumptions people are making about his intentions are varied and humorous at times. Just to let you all know, I don't think he is a foreign agent groomed from birth to bring down the USA, although I have to admit that would be an impressive feat to pull off. I also don't think he is the antichrist. The explanation is much, much simpler than people realize.
First of all his administration is pretty much making it up as they go. Look at Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and North Korea. I rest my case. But aside from the obvious Obama is looking ahead to the 2010 elections. He knows historically newly elected presidents tend to lose seats in congress from their party in the first mid-term election after they assume office. President Bush bucked this trend in 2004 and gained seats. President Obama knows he can do the same. That is why he is compiling a long list of legislative accomplishments now so he can start fundraising as soon as possible. In fact, the fundraising has already begun.
So what does this mean for Michigan? Well, 2010 is a big election year here and the biggest race is for governor. One would think this would be a slam dunk for Republicans right? I mean our current executive, Governor Granholm (D), has left us with state economy in shambles, higher taxes, skyrocketing unemployment and people leaving Michigan in droves. Whoever wins the Republican primary is as good as elected right? Well, no. I don't think it will be quite that easy. There are a couple of factors in play here that will work against the MIGOP. First, there is an anti-Republican sentiment swirling in our culture at the moment. As strange as it sounds it is trendy to hate Republicans. This is the perfect compliment to the adoration of Barack Obama. He can do no wrong in many peoples minds. With a news media that bolsters his administration in his corner, that bodes very well for Democrats in 2010. Now, that brings us to Michigan. Once the Obama fundraising juggernaut starts to roll it will be huge. In fact, that may be an understatement. When it starts to roll through Michigan Republicans may get bowled over in the money game and look like a PTA bake sale in comparison. When President Obama shares the stage with the Democrat candidate for governor and publically endorses him or her that is going to be a tough hurdle to overcome. Couple that with the campaign rhetoric of "we are just getting started" alluding to the fact that now Obama is the president we can get some things done in this country and you have a tough act to follow.
So set aside some of the conspiracy theories for now and just follow the money. Because there will be plenty of it flowing into Michigan in the next year.
