Cherry calls for more Job Losses

Lt. Governor John Cherry, in an effort to keep the Democrat party of Michigan wearing the title of Most devastating party ever, has called for a job killing $0.10 a bottle tax on water bottled in Michigan.

Cherry said Michigan's underground water belongs to the public. Cherry said the tax would generate $118 million, with $100 million earmarked for the Michigan Promise grants.

About 96,000 Michigan university students had expected Promise grants this school year ranging from $1,000 to $4,000.

Of course the promise grant went by the wayside as Cherry's mentor Jennifer Granholm used that money for what many see as an unnecessary new state police facility in Lansing.

Like everything the Democrats in Michigan propose, this one hardly fails the "if it moves, tax it" test.  It qualifies as an aggregate and easy to quantify tax. (Like hitting the side of a barn from 10') Easy to calculate.  OF course, if anyone has been paying attention, bottled water sales have already been given negative attention elsewhere (banned in some CA cities) and sales have leveled and starting to fall.

Adding a tax to bottled water ($2.40 per case of 24) WILL result in reduced sales.. Fewer sales, fewer jobs in the bottling facilities.. go figure.

The obvious disconnect of our dear leader and her not-so-glamorous protege becomes quite apparent when they show they cannot see that adding burden to Michigan business hurts it.  Here is a hint John..  Tax it more, get less of it.

Wrapping the tax around a feel good "they are stealing our water" argument is lame, except to those who haven't seen a lake before. Or suffer from Agoraphobia.  Michigan is one of those wonderful surprises for people who visit.  You are never more than 6 miles from a body of water.  We have plenty of it.

An argument about resources could be made about any manufacturing concern in the state in fact, and I am reasonably sure the would be Democrat selection for the Governor's race in 2010 would certainly not attack the refugees that remain of the manufacturing sector.  Oh wait..  ...never mind..

...the scholarship was constitutional, money was available this year.

The guv could've squashed the MSP HQ deal and save enough $$$ to pay for this year's program.

Yes, Joel Ferguson (and Gary Granger) would take a bath on it.

Yes, Ferguson & Granger would've taken it on by not contributing to democrats & Republicans.

Truth be told, Cherry is most likely into this for the bottle escheats to cover other programs.

Cherry says he needs $100 million for the Promise Grants so he proposes something that he says will raise $118 million.  Extra money to go to preservation of wetlands and to possible Great Lakes initiatives.

There was a comment by a poster on Mlive last night that typifies the Democrat attitude about governance and this state:

FINALLY!!! if Nestle is forced to move out of state to steal somebody else's water, good riddance. Buying bottled water is ridiculous and irresponsible for 99% of the population of Michigan. Putting a tax on such a wasteful habit could bring back a broken promise as well as cure some of the population of a bad habit.
In one sentence bdl725 identifies a evil business villain, dismisses the importance of employers and jobs, makes moral judgments concerning his neighbors' consumer habits, glorifies taxation and big spending programs, and embraces the virtue of using taxation as a punishment for undesired behavior.

Folks, this is what we are up against.  Meanwhile, U-haul and Ryder are doing a pretty brisk business.
