Poll Identifies Bishop as Strongest Candidate for Attorney GeneralBy mgolden, Section News
In a poll released this week, Senator Mike Bishop was the only candidate who chalked up a decisive victory in a hypothetical General Election match-up against newly announced Democratic Attorney General candidate Gretchen Whitmer.
Bishop also led opponent Bill Schuette amongst those that identified themselves as Republicans, as well as those identified as Independents. "Republicans need to nominate the strongest possible candidate in 2010 if it wants to elect a GOP attorney general. Mike Bishop begins the race with a 10% lead over a woman Democrat, while Bill Schuette is only tied with her," Steve Mitchell said recently regarding the results. "In a close race, having the lead Bishop has right now could be the difference between winning and losing next year."
The poll was conducted by Mitchell Research and Communications, who is not affiliated with any of the candidates who are running for Attorney General. It included 600 likely voters in the November 2010 General Election. The most frequently mentioned candidates were tested, including Mike Bishop and Bill Schuette on the GOP side and Gretchen Whitmer on the Democratic side.
Rssults show that Senator Bishop has a 10% lead over Whitmer (36%-26%), while Bill Schuette is tied with Whitmer (32%-32%). In a conversation with the Detroit News, Mitchell addded, "Bishop is doing so much better statewide against Whitmer because of his lead in the Metro Detroit Area. Bishop leads by a 2:1 margin (43%-21%) in the vote rich Oakland, Macomb, St. Clair and Wayne County outside of Detroit area, while Schuette only has a 1% lead (31%-30%) there. At this point, Bishop is clearly the stronger candidate for Attorney General." Other highlights of the poll: **Among men, Bishop leads Whitmer 42%-24% while Schuette leads 35%-31% Among women, Bishop leads 31%-29% while Schuette trails Whitmer 33%-30%. **Bishop has an 11% lead (37%-26%) with Election Day voters compared to Schuette's 2% lead (33%-31%). **Bishop leads with absentee voters by 2% (30%-28%) while Schuette trails by 2% (33%-31%). **Among the 81% who say they are ―definitely voting‖, Bishop leads Whitmer by 15% (41%-25%) while Schuette leads by just 4% (36%-32%).
