Who are the NERD fund donors Mr Snyder?

    Raise the curtain.

After watching the Kilpatrick debacle unfold this morning, this little tidbit disgusted me the most...

    (Continued below)

...according to The Detroit Free Press (a.k.a Ivory Tower):

The deal also calls for Kilpatrick to resign by Sept. 28 and 120 days in jail. That sentence will run at the same time as the jail time Kilpatrick agreed to in a deal he struck with Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy.

    Minimum jail time? Concurent sentences?
    Call for resignation?

Gee, why not offer a turn down service in his cell?

Concierge service for his very brief stint in the pokey?

If he believes that this type of behavior will help him get elected Governor in 2010...hoo boy, is he in for a shock!

That's what counts.  Despite all the twist and turns, this case didnt get on a path to settlement until AG Cox stepped in and pursued the assault charges.

And by the way, I dont want an AG that is making decisions in criminal decisions today looking at how it would look for a future office.  That mentality can be left to the Democratic Party.  That is not acceptable behaviour for us Republicans.

The truly unfortunate fact here is that Kilpatrick was holding the city hostage.  His plea deal, though quite light in terms of punishment, at least gets this crook out of the limelight and should help the city get back on track more quickly than playing it out over the next few months and years would have in criminal court.

The plea helps the city.  Perhaps this is what Cox was thinking.

Lets hope there are some lessons were learned here.  Maybe during the next election the voters of the city of Detroit will set the bar at least a wee bit higher.

    Dave Bing anyone?

Plea deal was the only sure thing... (none / 0) (#6)

Remember the whole "if the glove dont fit, you must acquit"...jurys are always a risk.  In this case, good to finally get this over with so we can fully focus on the FBI investigations into Kwame's father and the bribe taking city council members.

True, he was a guilty as a cat in a gold fish bowl (none / 0) (#7)

And yes, he would've been found guilty in either Ms. Worthy's or Mr. Cox's case.

But cutting a deal? What's up with that?

The standard line of, "We'll, this is normal procedure..."...sorry, but that dog won't hunt.

Call me old school, but I was under the impression that our nation operated on the concept of "Equal Justice Under Law"?

Mr. Cox said it himself, "This is a crime that is much more likely to happen on a recurring basis, I don't want anyone harrassing or trying to intimidate cops."

Well, neither do I. And I'll go out on a limb here and bet that most of the posters/lurkers/readers here feel the same.

But, I have met people who were stupid enough (read: drunk) to do what ex-Mayor Kilpatrick did. Not only did they get their backsides handed to them, they ended up as a guest of the county for a short stint.

They weren't afforded the luxury of resigning from their job in return for consideration of leniency.

They weren't given the opportunity of turning in the (driver's) license for a reduced sentence.

Or for that matter, even signing over their pension.

When did (formerly) having the title of "Mayor" change all that?

That being said, forgive my skepticism, but I still don't buy that a plea bargain was ever necessary in the first place.

Both assault charges should've been followed through, and in Kilpatrick's case, all sentences should've been served consecutively, not concurently.
