Why conservatives should vote Jim Howell for Court of Appeals

One of the little-covered races that will be on tomorrow's primary ballot is the open 4th District Court of Appeals judgeship, which spans 58 counties from Lansing to Port Huron, north through sunrise coast, west towards Traverse City, north across the Mackinac Bridge and west towards the Michigan-Wisconsin border.

There are four candidates vying to replace retiring Judge Bill Schuette, a former Republican congressman from Midland: Trial lawyer Michael Kelly and Lansing Judge Paula Manderfield are the liberals and Jim Howell, a former Republican state representative from Saginaw County, and Lansing barrister Eric Doster are the conservatives. Out of the four candidates, the top two will move on to compete in the November general election.

With far-lefties like Kelly -- whose Irish name is golden because everyone knows a Mike Kelly and many voters will assume he's related to legendary former Attorney General Frank Kelley -- and Manderfield in the race, it's important conservatives support a candidate with a proven track record who can win in November.

When I go to vote tomorrow, I'm going to be supporting a candidate who has faced voters before and won in staunchly Democratic districts. I'm going to be voting for a candidate who knows how to campaign -- a candidate who will strictly interpret the law and won't legislate from the bench.

I'll be casting a vote for Jim Howell, the experienced conservative candidate -- who's been endorsed by retiring Judge Schuette.

Howell served his country in Vietnam as a member of the U.S. Air Force. He walked a beat as a policeman in Saginaw and put himself through law school. As a state representative, Howell was chairman of the House Judiciary Committee.

As the Detroit News said when it endorsed him: "He has long experience in private practice, served as a police officer and sheriff's deputy before becoming an attorney and now is an assistant in the state Attorney General's Office. A Republican lawmaker, Howell took a generally conservative approach but proposed legislation to revise a Supreme Court decision that he thought was unfair to injury claimants, which shows an admirable streak of independence."

    Others supporting Howell include:

    • Court of Appeals Judge Bill Schuette
    • Supreme Court Justice Maura Corrigan
    • Court of Appeals Judge Patrick Meter
    • Former House Speaker Rick Johnson
    • Former State Representatives Lauren Hager, Ken Bradstreet and Scott Hummel
    • State Representatives Ed Gaffney, John Moolenaar and Tom Casperson
    • State Senators Bruce Patterson and Tony Stamas
    • Former State Senator Michael Goschka
    • Police Officers Association of Michigan
    • Michigan Association of Chiropractors
    • Michigan Bankers Association
    • Michigan Orthopaedic Society

spin on the FR numbers.  Doster skunked all three of his opponents by a mammoth margin.  And he did it during a primary, not having to wait for a general to turn on the jets.

But I give you credit for so quickly finding a less damaging way of saying the same thing.  :)

Oh, and remember, boys and girls... you read about Judge Schuette's endorsement of Eric Doster here on RM before you read about it anywhere else in the State.

Aaaaall of that said, Howell would be a gigantic step above Manderfield or Kelly.  The trick is making sure one of the conservatives survives against the surname and the gender.

I think Doster's got the best shot.

Suppose we'll both find out tomorrow!

Ignorning the realities of Michigan judicial elections (the pre-eminence of women and the Irish) for a moment, I wish your guy the best of luck in finishing a strong second behind Eric.

    :)

And with that I retire from the battlefield.  Figure it'd be more productive to highlight the Barackstar's appearance on-stage in Michigan with the Democratic architects of the Michigan economy than to continue any intra-party squabble, however friendly.

Either the stage-mates or his divinely-inspired proclamation that we must no longer use oil in America.  Nevermind what that decision would do to Michigan's auto industry... or his own campaign travel schedule for that matter... last I checked I think he needs gas to propel that fancy jet through the sky.

Who does Schuette Support... (none / 0) (#4)

I got an email today that Schuette is supporting Doster...could you please clarify who he supports?

Supreme Court Justice Maura Corrigan supports who? (none / 0) (#7)

If Justice Corrigan supports Howell, then why did Justice Corrigan donate to Doster but NOT Howell?? Also, of the relatively few contributors to Howell (especially compared to Doster), Howell received contributions from some of Lansing's most prominent trial lawyers.

    Jim Howell (5.00 / 2) (#8)

Jim already got my absentee vote ;)
--Reason for this is I supported him from the get-go.. but changed when I found out that its like pulling teeth to get campaign materials or anything for Doster. Doster happens to not be on my Roster because of lack of attention brought to potential volunteers on multiple occasions.

    Jim Howell is a Joke & anti -conservative. (none / 0) (#9)

For starters, I'm not a paid hack for any candidate in this race.  But it's clear the only conservative is Doster.

Jim Howell is the type of candidate that gives term limits a bad name.  He's been a career hack jumping from one tax-funded job to the next.  Has he ever not been paid by taxpayers?

Howell did nothing in the state legislature but occasionally vote with the Democrats.  His only saving grace in Lansing was that by not doing much he was that big of a threat to anyone.

Right to Life endorsed Doster, not Howell.

The Michigan Chamber of Commerce endorsed Doster, not Howell.

Howell opposes the Kriener decision which was written by Cliff Taylor, Maura Coorigan, Steve Markman, Bob Young et. al. Howell, like all the trial lawyers wants to reverse this decision.

This move, if allowed, would make it tougher for working families to get health insurance or make it more expensive.

This is not a conservative position.

    The choice is clear:

Vote for Doster and vote with Right to Life of Michigan and the Michigan Chamber of Commerce.
