Nibbling at the margins (none / 0) (#2)
by mcdirt on Fri Aug 01, 2008 at 07:08:19 PM EST
A majority of Americans now believe that increased drilling is a more important solution to the energy situation than conservation. This despite ample evidence that conservation is the cheapest, fastest and cleanest option. My hope is that the conservation measures proposed in this debate are real, and aggressive....and if so, it's a shame that Congress would adjourn before addressing it. Drilling will move gas prices down infinitesimally, and not for a long, long time. Conservation will help us almost immediately. Yet most of the fire and brimstone from the politicos has centered on drilling because it's tangible and easier to grasp than the policy nuances of conservation. I'm resigned to the fact that my friends on the Right here will oppose any conservation measure hinting at a mandate, and I respectfully disagree with that litmus test. Without a mandate, the entrenched, monied interests whose profits depend on continued reliance on oil will continue to control the debate, and the politicians who shape energy policy. I'm not necessarily against drilling in some places that are currently off limits....but we need to be honest that we're nibbling at the margins of the problem with that "solution" and that it's a continuation of the reliance that has brought us to this unfortunate point.

    Regards,

    Hugh

So how much energy is available to us in total? (none / 0) (#3)
by Clydes Dale on Fri Aug 01, 2008 at 07:58:18 PM EST
A solution to conserve is not out of the question.  We already have massive CAFE standards on cars and trucks. Various states have green energy standards where wind, solar, etc. are/will be forced on to the market regardless of cost to the end user.  Recycling is close to a religious experience in CA, NJ, and ME.  We scrub smoke stacks to remove all of 4ppm of Hg from coal stacks. We make special EPA blends of gaoline to decrease economies of scale.  Is there no end! Shall I decontaminate my son's diapers?

We stopped drilling in the Great Lakes.  We have not build a new Nuc plant in 30 years or so (God help us with the old age plants we have now - they are way over due) We have not built a oil refinery since the 70's. We don't drill off CA. We don't drill off Florida - and CUBA did lease drilling rights to CHINA 80 miles from FLA.  Ted Kennedy won't let windmills go up off of Marth's Vinyard. (Mary Jo Kopechne could not be reached for comment.)  ALL BECUASE OF DEMOCRATE/GREEN OVER REGULATION.  What do you want? For crying out loud . . .

Why don't the Dems just realize that if oil/energy is available (Jack 2, Bakken, Canadian oil shale, etc, 100 NEW nucs) we should go get it.  It is the working poor that will suffer this Democratic stupidity - and no one else.

Mr. Walberg is my congressman and he continues to do his district proud.

He's supposed to be at a coffee shop in Napoleon from 10:30-11:30 tomorrow morning, but if he's still in DC fighting Pelosi and the Dems I'll be happy if he has to postphone.

Ugh, the last thing we want is for Schauer to take his opinions of how to spend OPM to Washington.

    Do-Nothing Democrats (none / 0) (#9)

It's about time Congressional Republicans start publicly exposing House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and her fellow neo-communist Democrats as the do-nothing legislators that they truly are.

    Supply and Demand . . . (none / 0) (#11)
by Kevin Rex Heine on Sat Aug 02, 2008 at 10:46:04 AM EST
. . . are the two economic forces that drive price.  And, yes, demand is the greater determinant of the free-market price.  (You can have all the bread supply you want, and people will still pay a high price if demand is high enough.)  However, the foregoing logic assumes a freedom of choice between alternative suppliers.  (In other words; bread is fungible, and I can go to any grocery store in town to get a price I'm willing to pay.)

Currently this isn't true with energy resources in America.  We're a nation addicted to oil (or at least petroleum derivatives), to meet our energy demands.  And only a fraction of those demands are unrealistic.  So what we need in order to meet the realistic demands are alternative sources.

Thus, we really do need to develop such renewable supplies as wind and solar.  I'm not entirely sold on nuclear, because I read an MIT report a few years back that exposed some of the really dirty secrets of the industry, especially as related to hidden taxation.  (And I promise that as soon as I scrounge up that report, I'll stick a link up here.)

And yes, conservation is necessary.  We also must develop more fuel efficient vehicles.  Right now my car of choice is a Ford Escort (with a manual transmission), because they're so darned thrifty with gas.  But there's not one good reason that we cannot have fuel-efficient trucks and SUVs . . . if only the auto industry would just design and build them.

But supply also has an impact on price, though limited.  So in the meantime, we need to tap the reserves we do have at our disposal in order to make sure we can supply our national needs while alternate technologies are being brought online.  And the two must not be separated.  In other words; yes, drill where we've got it, but get out of the way of the development of better energy sources.  (Seriously, government, just get the hell out of the way.)

Honestly, had our entirely-too-short-sighted politicians (on both sides of the aisle) not sold us out thrity years or so ago, and repeatedly at every opportunity, we wouldn't be in this jam now.

Republicans take the obstuctionist do nothing liberal congress to task!

And I did e-mail them to  give my thanks but lets not stop there...

Pursuant to Article II, Section 3 of the Constitution of the United States of America,
the President can compel the House of Representatives and Senate to convene in special session.

The President can force the Democrats to either vote on energy legislation or not.

The President should call the Democrats' bluff. Call the President at 202-456-1111
and tell him to recall the Congress
    to Washington to vote on
    expanding domestic oil production.

Even Bush won't go along with your cry-in.

"The White House has rejected calls from House Republicans that it convene a special session of Congress on energy, saying it wouldn't make a difference."
