    Senator McCain gets my vote

Every Monday evening I play softball for North Park Baptist Church. Last night, however, while playing Berean Baptist, my mind seemed to drift. Between the pop-fly balls to left field (my position) and wavering line drives, my buddy Ben and I discussed why one should vote for Senator John McCain. Yes, the softball field is an unusual place to be conversing, but we both are on the McCain-train with good reason.

While Ben and I support Senator McCain, what continues to boggle my mind is why other conservatives with the same mind set as us continue to take issue with Senator John McCain? Though I do not have the straight-talk-express answer to such a question, I will share with you just a few reasons we discussed on the ball field that may sway a conservative vote or two toward Senator McCain.

Right to Life. This is undoubtedly an issue here at Right Michigan that we have a deep conviction for. Our hearts are sincerely sunken when we hear of the terrible loss of life to abortion. Senator John McCain also understands that the sanctity of life and the innocent need protection. He advocates the overturning of Roe v. Wade as it was a flawed decision. Senator McCain would also "nominate judges who understand that courts should not be in the business of legislating from the bench." To further protect life, John McCain would encourage and promote the wonderful act of adoption. John and his wife Cindy have personally adopted a little girl from Bangladesh.

Furthermore, to protect children, Senator McCain addresses the issues of protecting children from the dangers of internet pornography, the dangers of internet predators, and the dangers of losing the sanctity of a traditional marriage. Senator McCain not only understands, but recognizes the value of marriage being defined as the holy union of one man and one woman. The traditional family, to McCain, needs to be preserved and defended. By doing so, children are raised in a healthier home environment.

Liberals would love to take the guns of law-abiding citizens and fortunately John McCain is no liberal. Senator McCain believes "we have the responsibility to ensure that criminals who violate the law are prosecuted to the fullest, rather than restricting the rights of law-abiding citizens." Gun control only bleeds failure. In 1996, a study by John Lott and David Mustard, if states that currently do not have concealed weapons permits in effect today actually would have had them in effect since 1992, murders would have decreased by 1,500 people. Not only that, but rapes would be predicted to decrease by 4,000, robberies by over 11,000, and violent assaults by over 60,000. All this is without an increase in accidental gun deaths! Senator McCain understands that law-abiding citizens deserve the right to protect their lives and property through the Second Amendment.

The democratically controlled Congress has an approval rating, oh, of about 11%. The problems most Americans have with the House and Senate are that they spend, well to put it frankly, liberally. And that is not even the nastiest part, they are spending our money! John McCain advocates cutting the pork barrel spending. Washington abuses taxpayer dollars for such things as pet projects of special interest groups, often through last minute additions to appropriation bills. It is absurd and honestly angers me. Most Americans live tightly on a set budget, why shouldn't Congress? Senator McCain honorably understands that Washington insults taxpayers and needs to learn to be fiscally responsible. Dave Ramsey anyone?

No one wishes for war. War is generally waged only as the last line for defending freedom. "John McCain believes it is strategically and morally essential for the United States to support the Government of Iraq to become capable of governing itself and safeguarding its people." The Senator solidly opposes anyone who advocates withdrawing American troops before that has occurred. Our war on terrorism also encourages the security of our beautiful nation.

On the issue of national security, John McCain acknowledges, and once being part of the armed forces himself understands that to protect our nation we need a strong military in a dangerous world. To encourage a strong military Senator McCain supports the development of an effective missile defense, increasing the armed forces, modernizing the armed services, and working aggressively to reform defense spending in a smarter fashion.

As far as the economy is concerned, Senator John McCain does not waver from the notion of free markets, capitalism, and less governmental regulation; a truly conservative stance. Here in Michigan, we understand that overtaxing small businesses only drives jobs away. John McCain advocates the economic growth of this country through traditionally conservative pro-market solutions.

When looking at a few of Senator John McCain's positions, you can see that his convictions lie in the right wing of the political spectrum. And I know I have said it before, but as a conservative it is acceptable not to agree with Senator McCain on every issue, but it is unreasonable not to vote for him because you do not agree with him on every cause.

Ben and I will continue to play softball, and hopefully will keep our heads in the game next time, but even if we don't, we will for sure be voting Senator John McCain for President this November!

You played Berean?  Did you meet my brother Jake?  He plays for the team.  Or my boys Chris and Eric and Steve?  Chris and Eric are just back from "the sandbox" and Steve, well, he and my sis are sorta... who knows.

    Small world.  Very cool.

I hope you lost.  No offense. ;)

supports a permanent presence in Iraq. That means if he has his way, our troops will never be removed from Iraq. McCain? More of the same.
