Another day in Libtopia: Barack claims he won MI while UAW puts nearly 30,000 out of work

Great examples of what happens when you've got lefties running the show splashed all over the news this morning.  Ironic great.  Not awesome great.  Actually, the opposite of awesome since we're talking about violations of the law, discrediting of the law and tens of thousands of workers out of a job by Monday.

In other words, just another day in Michigan.

Other than that whole Granholm / Cherry tax cheat thing.  Having a tax lien filed against you by the federal government isn't something that happens to you every day.

But while that may be leading the political coverage statewide there's still that giant mess regarding the Democrat national convention delegation that's garnering significant ink as well.  And in some surprising ways.  This morning the Ivory Tower itself has a lead editorial skewering the Democrat Party and their leading candidates for the way they've treated and continue to treat Michigan and encouraging the DNC to accept the results of the legally held and certified January 15th Michigan Presidential primary.  (Though they're willing to toss out the results under the right circumstances... c'mon, it's the FREEP.  We can only ask so much.)

Now that neither Obama nor Clinton seems likely to clinch the nomination without being able to count the Michigan delegates, they're both hankering for a way to get things set right.

Well, their love for Michigan is pretty transparent, given that neither candidate has campaigned here or addressed the state's issues very much along the campaign trail.

Clinton, after "winning" the contest here in which she was the only serious candidate on the ballot, even admitted that the delegates wouldn't count. Back then, though, she figured her nomination was a lock and she wouldn't need our delegates. Now we're supposed to believe that she's worried about the sanctity of the democratic process, or fairness to those who turned out Jan. 15?

Michigan has already spent $10 million on the Jan. 15 primary. There was nothing illegitimate about that election, no reason to doubt the veracity of the results. So that's what the party ought to be forced to work with, unless it's willing to hold its own election, staged and paid for with its own effort and money.

Interesting, too, that the wrap would use quotation marks around the word "winning" when describing Clinton's victory back in January.  Especially in light of Barack Obama's claim on NBC's Today Show that he won Michigan.  A claim that his camp has thus far refused to retract, leading to a feature length section in Lansing insider publication MIRS speculating on whether or not the man actually intended to make that claim.

Several Lansing journalists including Bill Ballenger have called Obama "delusional" in light of his refusal to address rampant questions about the "gaffe."  Others think he may genuinely be trying to spin his way to a better deal when it comes to a potential revote.  And there, dear reader, is the danger of tossing out legally held and certified election results.  You get camps and candidates and campaigns playing games and resorting to shanahanigans to try to change results and work "deals."

    Read on...

At least it looks as if everyone aggress the taxpayers shouldn't have to foot the bill for any new vote.  Not that that in any way addresses the likely disenfranchisement of millions of voters who had the opportunity to cast a ballot in January but who won't have the chance the second time around.

Not that it in any way addresses the way Clinton and Obama have treated Michigan like their red headed step child for just about a year now refusing to even step foot in our State and only now talking about us at all because they realize they actually do need us.

And not that it addresses the wasted tax dollars spent on what could effectively wind up being a meaningless election back in January.  There was some interesting discussion here on the site yesterday about the cost of that election and it's worth further exploration.

Tax cheat Granholm is quick now to state that she doesn't think the taxpayers should have to pay for the new contest.  But if the Democrats hold a closed party caucus (the most likely choice) it will cost significantly less than the $10 million January's election cost the taxpayers.  Clearly, there is a more equitable solution here...

Should the expenses of their new caucus fail to reach $5 million (half the cost of January's contest) they should be asked to reimburse the taxpayers of the State of Michigan for their portion of the election they asked for, legislated, received, participated in and (will have) now discarded.

Anything less and they're just wasting tax dollars.

Something the State can't afford and certainly something working moms and dads can't afford.  Especially with the devastating news this morning that the UAW strike at American Axle isn't going to shutter ten plants... it's going to shutter 20.  By Monday.  The Detroit News reports:

Contract talks resumed Thursday between American Axle & Manufacturing Holdings Inc. and the United Auto Workers union, as the 10-- day strike threatened to idle or partially shut down 13 more General Motors Corp. plants as early as Monday.

GM, the Detroit-based supplier's largest customer, has already idled seven assembly plants, since 3,600 American Axle workers at five factories walked off their jobs Feb. 26. If no settlement is reached over the weekend, operations will halt at 20 GM plants, affecting 27,258 hourly workers -- a third of the automaker's manufacturing work force.

Among the plants slated for work stoppage Monday are Romulus Engine and Saginaw Metal Casting, both to be fully shut down. Toledo Transmission, Flint South Engine and Bay City Components would be partially shut down.

But hey, progress.  The union finally came to the bargaining table to address those costs of employment.  Remember, they're walking the picket line because American Axle, a Michigan company, has the gall to seek a little cost parity with her Ohio competitors.  While the competition pays about $30 an hour per employee AA is forking over more than $73.  Do that much longer and they can permanently turn out the lights.

Not that the UAW has any responsibility to the nearly 30,000 workers who will be out of a job on Monday thanks to their outrageous demands.
