I don't know about you, but I strongly believe that illegal immigration is the number one issue facing Americans today. This country is being invaded by people who only want to live off the system and not give back. They take our jobs, our social security benefits, and our medical benefits. And yet it seems the government isn't doing anything to stop them.

Personally I think more needs to be done. And for starters the government can actually force the laws that are already in place.  The current laws prohibit illegal immigration and say that anyone who breaks those laws should be deported at once. Thankfully there is some recent activity among the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) that are actually acting upon those laws.

A recent AP story says that the ICE has done a six state sweep, including Michigan, of those illegals who have outstanding deportation orders and have deported them back to 12 different countries. These countries are not only from south of the border, but from all over the globe including India and Poland. A total of 225 arrests were made. full article here

Now 225 out of the estimated 12 million illegals here is comparitively hopeless, but it's a start. That's 225 fewer people who are feeding off of American citizens.  It's not much of a difference but it's a large step from where we've been. In order for illegal immigration to decrease, perhaps the US should start acting upon what is already in place. Obviously current laws some what work or else these 225 would still be here.

I hope stories like this continue to surface. It shows that if we work with what we already have, things can improve. But even this isn't enough. If we don't do something to cut off illegals entering this country future generations are going to have a bigger problem than we do now. And frankly I don't want that for my future children or grand children.

Jessica Vaughan, senior policy analyst with the Washington-based Center for Immigration Studies, which favors limits on immigration, called the delays cause for concern. She said she is unsure who deserves the blame: overwhelmed immigration courts or lawyers clogging up the system with hard-to-win claims.

Julie L. Myers, the assistant secretary of homeland security for Immigration and Customs Enforcement, pointed out that a significant number of immigrants had been deported. She said it was "appropriate" for the others to be fighting to stay in court, as the law allows.

"I certainly understand the frustration, if there's frustration on the American public's part, but that's certainly the immigration court's process and I think it's fair that it plays out," Myers said during a news conference at the Tip O'Neill Federal Building in Boston today.
