Conf. Committee Update: They're in recess until TOMORROW! Granholm and Dillon reneg on budget deal!

Update [2007-5-15 20:52:1 by Nick]:Looks like hopes of wrapping this up as reported in the AP, FREEP and DetNews today WERE as premature as we'd thought earlier in the night.

    Subscription only Gongwer is reporting:

At the conference committee meeting Mr. Bishop, which finally convened past 7 p.m., said he was angry at the situation. “I’m absolutely beyond words as to how to explain this newest wrinkle in the process,” he said. “This is a complete reneging of the agreement.”

And he put the blame for what he said was the collapse squarely on Ms. Granholm, saying she needed to show leadership to resolve the situation which he said the worst example of runaway, out of control govern-ment he had ever seen.

Mr. Bishop said he was not giving up on the process, however, and recessed the committee meeting until 9 a.m., Wednesday, and said, “I hope the angel of common sense and reason comes down on all of you.”

    That part is official.

Unofficially the buzz around town all day (coming from Republicans and Democrats... yes... I have friends in Lansing with a D behind their name) has been that the House and Senate actually had an agreement over the weekend prompting hopes of an official signed resolution today.  That agreement, the story goes, was scuttled by a sudden flurry of phone activitiy from the Governor's office.  As far as the "why," no one cares to go on the record at this point.

    Suppose time will tell.

    Stay tuned TOMORROW now.

I'm surprised that you have friends with a D behind their name, but not that the Governor would try and stop an agreement over the budget. After all, if she doesn't get all the random tax hikes she wants, she won't buy it. :-/

    Wow, if true.. (5.00 / 1) (#2)

That would make Granholm quite an obstructionist.  Playing politics, instead of what's "best for the state".

And if it's not purposeful, then that makes her the most incompetent Governoress in the united states.

I know that NoviDemo and MichiLibels will spin this being the Republicans fault (if only Bishop did't look so tan, then Granholm wouldnt need a day off to tan herself!).

When you can only threaten tax hikes onestor $122 cuts (of the $250 planned increase)... how can you honestly say you're looking at every option?  Calgon, take me away.  To Las Vegas.

    Where was Dillon? (5.00 / 1) (#3)

Spent this morning tracking this one down and between folks in Lansing and Paul W. we've got an answer...

Dillon was in Detroit talking about DPS.  He left instructions to "vote no" on the budget deal then he turned off his cell phone and refused to return calls.
