House Minority Leader Craig DeRoche addresses Democrat tax "fix"

I think in this instance I'll just let the Minority Leader say it himself...

"To say the business community supports this plan is like saying that a death row inmate chooses the firing squad over the electric chair. Either way, leaving Michigan job providers on the hook for millions of dollars in preparation and implementation costs, compounded by Speaker Dillon's decision to leave town Wednesday without a fix, has left thousands of jobs hanging in the balance.

"As a direct result of this `incompetence tax,' Michigan's job providers were forced to waste nearly $14 million a day getting ready - money which business owners can't use to keep current employees, let alone hire new workers.

"Michigan is going to head into the holiday season with even more layoff notices. The Democrats must turn their philosophy around - the Legislature must try to encourage job growth, not stifle it. That's why House Republicans will fight to provide tax credits to eliminate the `incompetence tax.'

"None of this had to happen. House Republicans offered a plan immediately after the implementation of the service tax, a plan which put more money into priorities such as education and public safety. Our plan offered $670 million in reforms and government streamlining, making tax increases unnecessary.

"Unfortunately, the House Democrats chose higher taxes over reform and job growth."

Hugh, I guess you haven't heard the news. The Legislature voted today to repel the sales tax on some services and put a surcharge on the MBT in its place. The Senate voted 33-4. That sounds kind of like a few Republicans voted for it. Hell, one of the no votes was from a Democrat. The House voted 66-42, so there are at least nine Republicans who voted for it. So doses that mean you're going to recall 17 Republican Senators, Patterson was too busy hunting, and nine Reps?

DeRoche is the minority leader for a reason, and he is filling the role like it was made for him, at least the minority part. He plays no part in actual business and just criticizes. He's very good at that.

The Democrats did the right thing or arrogant Bishop would just continue to drag his feet to make the governor look bad during his run for governor. It's about time the House Democrats got some balls and stoop up to that arrogant ass. It's far too early to be campaigning for governor at the expense of the state.

It's sad that all you guys do here is pull for and cheer any bad news Michigan receives. You cheer every time the unemployment numbers are slightly higher or the same and when any job is lost. It's sad you're pulling against the state you live in just for political power.

Despite a bunch of nattering nabobs of negativity like you, Michigan is the best state in the union to live in.

Communications Guru, you're stupidity is just amazing.  Did your mother purposefully drop you on your head when you were born?

If Michigan is such a paradise to live in under the Granholm/Dillon dictatorship, then why is there a mass exodus of people from Michigan and why are so many people trying to sell their homes???  I'll grant you that Michigan may be Socialist paradise for neo-communist liberals like you, Comrade Granholm, and Andy "Double Dealing" Dillon.  However, the majority of Michigan's residents did not vote for Granholm or Dillon for the purpose of increasing government spending and raising taxes.

In fact, it is well documented that Granholm committed the legal equivalent of "fraudulent misrepresentation" when she flat out lied upon being asked if she would raise taxes during her reelection last year, which she unequivocally denied.  Granholm also committed the legal equivalent of "silent fraud" by failing to disclose that state government spending was already materially exceeding the budget one month prior to her reelection.

Finally, you are apparently too dense to understand why Senate Republicans voted to replace the services tax with another tax.  The services tax was the dumbest tax ever foisted on Michigan and it was rammed into law solely by Granholm and the Democrats in Lansing (aided by a couple of traitorous Republicans who will be receiving political retribution in due course) on threat of state government shutdown.  Therefore, anything repealing/replacing the services tax was a far better alternative outcome, which by the way was initiated by the Senate Republicans who once again had to clean up Comrade Granholm's mess.  Thus, the analogy of choosing execution between death by firing squad over the electric chair is most apt.

Nick is trying to make it so Republicons don't know that Bishop and his cronies voted for the new MBT tax to replace the service tax.

Let's see how the vote went, shall we:

    Republicons absent: Patterson
Republicons voting against: Nancy Cassis, Alan Sanborn
Democrats voting against: Glenn Anderson, Liz Brater

Everyone else in the Senate was a go on the tax increase.

So, Leon, when do we see recall petitions going out for PappaGeorge and Bishop?

You aren't going to do a "Portrait of a Tax Hiker" series starting with Mike Bishop?  You partisan hack, you.

But it is funny watching you spin this new tax as a compromise when your boy Bishop likes it, and a tax hike when the Dems do.

Nick, it's so cute watching you spin this that if I was your aunt, I would squeeze your cheeks!

go take a good, loooong look in the mirror, Guru.  Read the papers.  No one is happy with your feckless leader.  Not even the female business leaders that asked her to hire a COO- they've all voiced their disappointment in her choice. Does she pick who they suggest? NO.  Does she pick a Democrat with business experience (if such a creature exists) NO. She picks Daniel Krichbaum, someone with absolutely no real-world, job-creating experience. He did, however, write her and her political friends lots and lots of checks.

You want to slam the Republicans?  Go right ahead.  It is DECEMBER- two months AFTER the budget was supposed to be adopted. The Governor's first lame attempt went down in absolute flames with the business community, not to mention the fact that it would have cost more to implement than the State would collect.  There's some great planning. What do the residents of this battered state get?  More dodging of responsibilities by the House Majority Leader.

I can hardly wait to see what you Democrats come up with for new taxes for the next budget, because you're going to need it.  Property values are declining, and Oakland County is already looking at a $5 million decline in property tax revenues.  How many more millions of dollars will be lost due to declining property values?  Businesses will close as a result of this ridiculous super tax-on-tax just passed, which will decrease sales and SBT tax revenues. So you and your feckless leader will have an even deeper hole to dig out of.

Nattering Nabobs of negativity?  No, just frustrated, fed-up folk of the feifdom.

Considering the Republicons in the Senate just voted for a massive tax hike, and had it passed in the Senate the first time around under the service tax, you guys have yourselves to blame as well.

I'm still waiting for the Senate Republiblicons version of Portrait of a Tax Hiker.

I'd like a list.  Please make your inquiry with results.  Do you think tax increases will "pull" Michigan out of one of the worst single state recession in recent years?  Please don't blame Engler, this is getting really old by now.

Did you hear about the cross dresser executive order Granholm signed over the weekend?  Probably not.  State workers can now cross dress to work.  Very classy.  And just in time to put a huge smile on your boy John Stryker.

Do me favor, every time you get your paycheck pending your employed, remember what Granholm said in the free press, your money is not yours, its mine and the governments money.

If you like this tax increase, please post your address, I can send you my tax bill.

Senate Republicons who voted for the increase in the MBT tax:

All except Patterson, Cassis, and Sanborn.  Patterson was absent.

House Republicons: Amos, Gaffney, Nofs, Palsrok, Ball, Wenke, Calley, and Rocca.

And as for making the claim that Granholm think all your money is hers, I wonder why Bush keeps collecting money from your paycheck, too.  When is the post denouncing him going up?

And which party controlled the Senate when the service tax was passed?  Who allowed it to come to a vote?

Your posts condemning Bishop for allowing it to come to a vote in the first place.

Also missing your condemnation of this new increase.

And why is the reply option on some comments and not others?  That's really annoying.

I don't speak Elvish.  The cow just sounds like gibberish.

Still, like I said, slice it how you want, but a new surcharge on the MBT is still a hike compared to the tax structure prior to October.  Bishop allowed the vote on the hated service tax to begin with knowing it would pass (not to mention the income tax, which I seldom hear you guys crying about, and the Senate Republicons approved a budget that used every penny that is coming from the new taxes.  In other words: Increased spending.

But hey, I can see I've got you in a mood.  Good to know.

"The surcharge is expected to replace the entire $600 million in revenue the service tax would have raised in the 10 months remaining in this fiscal year, an amount that's expected to increase to around $750 million in the next full fiscal year."

    $750 million.  Increase.

Data collected by the state is based off of accounting codes filed by business.  I'm guessing after layoffs, downsizing, and perhaps shutting its doors, I highly doubt the state will collect an increase.  Any person or thing can say 600 million, 750 million, 1.9 billion deficit, 450 million rainy day fund and so on.  However, with an enormous number of owners in the business community upset at the incompetence of Granholm and her hiring of a COO puppet, I'm guessing significant backlash in 2008. If I'm wrong, I will shave my full head of hair.

my paycheck increase and money back from G W. Bush.  5 years of refunds.  Not bad, but I'll loose that with Granholm.  So my personal budget will change.  You can't defend your sisterhood Granholm on this, your paycheck has seen a drop, if you are gainfully or legally employed.  No doubt you can not defend that.  As for Bush, please this is really old too.  Please don't blame bush for your ineptitude since you're unable to pay your credit card bill or anything.  I've heard them all.

    $750 million.  Increase.

Ummm.  I think you need to learn to read, dude.  "expected to increase to around $750 million..."

    Some fine points:

    1. expected
    2. increase to

It's not an additional $750 million over the already-replaced $600 million.  This year's $600 million is in six months - or about $60mil/month.  If you take that over 12 months, it's "around $750 million" ($720, but maybe mlive can't count).

But your argument is saying that an increase in revenue means it's a tax increase.

That's like saying President Bush's or Reagan's across-the-board tax cuts (which led to the largest revenues in their histories) were in fact tax increase, specifically because they generated more revenue.  This is patently absurd.

Or your reasoning is flawed and your ability to read diminished.  Either way, it casts doubt on your other conclusions (like "Republicons" being Evil, and Bishop is some bad guy).

I'm sure Ron Paul is looking for more supporters, your piss-n-vinegar style would match very nicely over there.

JG, either way, the new MBT is expected to bring in more revenue than the service tax was, it's an increase in taxes on business, and your Republicon buddies voted for it.  Enjoy knowing your guys sold out.

No sobbing here.  Your probably in the 8.0% unemployment or the 15% in wayne county.  I can taste the fear.  Your so afraid of logical thought process, it makes me laugh.

Detroit give tax breaks to Quicken, drops property taxes, gives significant incentives to business.  Yet nobody wants to do business in Detroit.  Granholm wants to give people breaks that buy homes that can't afford, but wait, residents are unemployed because of Clintons NAFTA.  SHAFTA NAFTA!  If Granholm can give tax breaks to Toyota, why not Big 3?

You never answered my questions about the liberals who opposed the tax?  Democrats don't support tax increases?  Shocking.
