           Back when the ink was hardly dry on the Constitution, congress passed a law in 1798 making it a crime to criticize the government (the Sedition Act). It wasn't just a paper technicality either- the administration put it to use immediately to silence political opposition.            These sorts of things seem to come and go, instigated by fervent patriots who believe they know best, and are doing great things for their country. Individuals suffer during these phases, but somehow the nation recovers each time without permanently canceling the Constitution.
