  • Your New Scoop Site

    Welcome to Scoop!

To help you figure things out, there is a Scoop Admin Guide which can hopefully answer most of your questions.

    Some tips:

    • Most of the layout is changed in "Blocks", found in the admin tools menu
    • Features can be turned on and off, and configured, in "Site Controls" in the admin tools menu
    • Stories have an "edit" link right beside the "Full Story" link on an index page, and right beside the "Post a Comment" link on the full story page. They can also be edited by clicking the story title in the "Story List" admin tool
    • Boxes are what allow you to write new features for Scoop; they require a knowledge of the perl programming language to work with effectively, although you can often make small changes without knowing much perl. If you would like a feature added but cannot program it yourself, ScoopHost does custom Scoop programming as one of its services.
    • If you aren't sure where to look for a particular feature or piece of display, try the "Search Admin Tools" link in the admin tools menu.

Lansing Lefties pushing a pair of new taxes

It's the day after Easter.  If you're like me, yesterday featured some awesome family time, a trip to church (for many of you, the only time this year... shame!) since, you know, all that Jesus conquering death stuff is sort of important to this particular holiday, and heaping helpings of chocolate and jelly beans.

Because apparently rabbit shaped confections are also important to this particular holiday.

After a day like that there's little more I'd like to do this morning than revel in the realization that He is Risen (!), enjoy the fact that I've been blessed with an awesome family and roll around on the ground like a dying bear as I battle mightily to digest the giant ball of sugar currently sitting like a rock in the pit of my stomach.

Alas.  That would be too easy.  Can't even browse the morning's headlines without being shaken violently back to the reality of John Cherry's vision for Michigan.

Two new tax-hike schemes in one morning?  Say it ain't so!

Saving lives through rotten economic policy

No surprise that folks are leaving Detroit.  As we've discussed recently, they're leaving Michigan, period.  Still, every time I read an expert carve the numbers up in new and creative ways I'm staggered a bit.

The Detroit News details the latest report this morning, this one from the Brookings Institution, that shows most big cities are home to about 55% of the total jobs in the metro area, the remaining 45% more than ten miles from the "city center."

Detroit is home to only 23% of the jobs in her metro area, with 77% more than 10 miles away, and the effect that has on native Detroiters is pretty heavy.

"Job sprawl is detrimental to employment and raises a lot of challenges," said author Elizabeth Kneebone, whose study of employment trends mapped 98 metropolitan areas, from 1998-2006.

It means many low-income and minority residents are often isolated from job opportunities, she said, and it adds to commute times and expenses.

On a morning like this, that's an especially frustrating reality.  We're talking, what, five inches of snow in the D?  Love these Michigan springs.  But... and this is a big but... John Cherry may actually have a silver lining in all of this.

The Democrats presumptive 2010 Gubernatorial candidate has been running around the state telling voters and newspaper editorial boards (those still in operation) both that the record of his administration these last six-plus years is a strong one and that he'll be proud to run on that record next fall.

The Associated Press offers a headline this morning that provides the man with the perfect "I told you so!"

Bad economy holds highway deaths to 1960s levels

That, my friends, is the way you find a silver lining.
