    House Amendment Kills Common Core

Lansing still has a few good men.

Tom McMillin is one of them

The Michigan House today approved the Department of Education budget with an amendment which does not allow them to implement Common Core State Standards or "Smarter Balanced Assessments". Sponsored by State Rep. Tom McMillin, the amendment is similar to House Bill 4276 which is currently before the House Education Committee.

The amendment addresses the Common Core State Standards that were never approved by a Michigan Legislature. Concerns had been raised about the State Board of Education exceeding its authority as it attempts to implement standards in Michigan schools, created by a private, national organization, the National Governor's Association. The National Governor's Association controls the content of the Common Core State Standards, and the privately-owned "Smarter Balanced Assessments" align with those standards.

    Think copyrighted 'Fire-Codes'.

    Continued below the fold

    McMillin says
"The Department of Education is trying to put Michigan schools in Common Core without legislative approval. Giving our authority to control what is taught in our schools to any national entity is wrong. I am glad the House is taking up the debate of whether this is appropriate."
And some national education experts also weighed in on the budget amendment. American Principles Project director Emmet McGroarty said
"The Common Core adoption cut the people and their elected legislators out of the process.  On a matter that concerns the education of children, that is an especially fatal flaw. The House has taken a big step toward correcting that."
Also Sandra Stotsky  currently a rofessor of Education Reform at the University of Arkansas who had served on Common Core's Validation Committee from 2009-2010, now opposes the standards:
"Michigan can have a brighter future if its own mathematics, science, engineering and literary experts at its great universities are asked to work out college-ready standards for Michigan high schools. Today's smart move by the House gives Michigan the opportunity to work out a range of state-based high school curriculum options."
    Indeed.

    And we applaud that move.

Something else that some folks might consider as a reason to oppose common core is the intent to invalidate home school teaching.  Establishing a 'standard'; one that is even as low as the common core, will mandate certain requirements not currently burdening home school parents.  A new regulatory regime would have to be implemented to address those who wish to utilize the HS option, and the bureaucratic nightmare would end the option for most.

Which is all part of the plan.

The budget now goes to the Senate for consideration.

...kudos to Rep. McMillin for introducing this bill.

The more I've read about CCSS, the less I like about it.

Also, for those of you in Southeast Michigan, specifically House District 18 (from MEDEFCO):

Please attend a meeting at Rodgers Elementary School, 21601 L'Anse Street, St. Clair Shores..., MI 48081, on Monday, April 29th, 2013, from 6:00pm til 9:00pm, to voice our opposition of the Common Core curriculum in our schools, and to support Michigan House Bill 4276 which would opt Michigan out of the Federal Common Core curriculum.

Enough calls have been made to call a meeting with the Rep. Roberts to discuss this issue. We really need you to attend, and please bring your friends and neighbors who feel the same. Let's send Representative Roberts a clear message that she needs to SUPPORT Michigan HB4276 and keep the federal government from data mining our kids from Kindergarten through age 20 as the Common Core curriculum requires.
