You just knew this was coming.  Expect more.

About 2,500 more signatures than are needed to hold a November recall election against Rep. Paul Scott, R-Grand Blanc, were filed with the State Bureau of Elections today, a move recall organizers say proves the strength and potential of their organization.

The Committee Against Government Overreach had only about two weeks to gather the 12,200 signatures after the Genesee County Elections Commission approved their recall language July 21.

Ironic, eh?  Liberal unions using 'Against Government Overreach'.  That's exactly what Liberals are all about.  Down is up anymore, I reckon.  Damn shame, but I have little sympathy towards those in the legislature that are about to get their tickets punched.  They bowed to Governor Snyder's "too divisive" agenda.  How's that Kumbaya thingy working out for ya, Rep. Scott?

Oh well, at least Wisconsin Governor Walker and his Republicans got something worthwhile accomplished for all their troubles with public sector unions.

    As I've said elsewhere . . . (none / 0) (#1)

. . . I really think that recalls ought to be saved for when the conduct of the elected official in question is so putrid that waiting until the next primary is simply intolerable.  I also agree with Dennis Lennox (mark that down, because it doesn't happen often) that recalls ought to be restricted to verifiable misfeasance, malfeasance, or nonfeasance in the performance of one's official duties/responsibilities.

Now by that standard, I have a real problem with all of these recalls that are circulating, because the only "offense" that these officials are guilty of is supporting and passing into law something that just might be controversial.  However, Michigan's election law doesn't work that way; the only requirements for the petition language are that the reason for recall be a political issue clearly stated within 200 words, and that the objectionable behavior in question must have occurred during the current term of office of the official in question.

What I do find surprising, though, is that the necessary signature count was accomplished within a mere two weeks.  That tells me that Rep. Scott really screwed up big, and the voters in his district are simply using the petition as an excuse of convenience.  (Given the speed with which this was accomplished, it may be that the "Tiger Woods of the GOP" may be one of those six true stinkers on the republican side of the State House that needed to be the target of a tea-party-driven electoral decimation.)

I also noticed that Stu Sandler, CEO of Decider Strategies, has between 15 and 24 Democrats targeted for recall . . . so what's good for the goose seems to be good for the gander.

Just taking down a few notes here... (none / 0) (#4)

    • Over 12,000 signatures in two weeks.

    • Irony not lost on democrats when it comes to choosing campaign names.

    • Baby daddy issue.

    • Dennis Lennox is actually right for once.

With the exception of the paid signatures, aren't those last three among the signs of the end times?

On a serious note, I warned about this months ago, but look at the end result as a positive thing.

When only two Capitol Critters were recalled back in '83, even that had the desired effect on Lansing. No one got stupid for at least several years and used hiking taxes to solve their problems. That lesson had apparently been lost after Gov. Snyder hosted his kool aid kegger and got the Mi-GOP to go along with unneeded tax hike, after unneeded tax hike, after unneeded tax hike.

And just so everyone is picking this up on HD, not only were these votes totally unnecessary, but it ran counter to the Mi-GOP's own stated principles (see #4).

After Michigan republicans see Gov. Snyder leave their colleagues twisting in the wind after February recall votes (does anyone really believe that he'll do anything to save Rep. Scott's tail), the message that raising taxes is not the answer, just might sink in the this time.

Hopefully for at least another 30 years.
