Action Alert: Michigan Senate Committee to Take-Up Patriotism Tax

    Feel like playing conscience?

How often to lawmakers have a chance to be legitimate patriotic heroes?

Last week we talked about the ridiculous new "Patriot Taxes" passed by [ahem..] House Republicans.

By way of a refresher, the supposed conservative caucus passed House Bill 4293, a bill that sponsors would have us believe is designed to open the door for more fireworks here in the state of Michigan.  What sponsors didn't tell you, and were hoping you'd never find out, is that they loaded the bill up with FOUR NEW TAXES on patriotism.

They doubled the sales tax, imposed giant new taxes on businesses selling fireworks, imposed new transfer taxes on "licenses" to sell the fireworks.

And, they included language opening the door for and encouraging local city, township and village governments to impose their own taxes on fireworks without including any limits on the new local taxes whatsoever!

Only 8 of 63 House GOPers voted NO on these new taxes, a shameful showing for even the most milquetoast "Republican" caucus.

    Very strange.

But the Michigan State Senate has a chance to make this right.  The Patriot Tax has been referred to the Senate Regulatory Reform Committee.  The committee has a 5-2 GOP advantage over the Dems (who supported the Patriot Taxes by an even larger margin than the Republicans in the House).

The Committee has the ability to strip these taxes and bring a little liberty back to patriotic expression.  Rumor has it, they'll be considering the issue in committee THIS WEEK!

Time is of the essence.  It takes ten minutes to drop BOTH an email and a call into each of their offices.  Let them know that we're watching.  Let them know that we care.  Encourage them to do the right thing and to stand up for mom, apple pie and liberty.  Ask them to VOTE NO on the Patriot Tax, House Bill 4293.

Rick Jones... SB 0193 & SB 0194 are same content as the HB 4293 & HB 4294.

Darwin Booher and John Proos are Senate cosponsors for Jones.
