So . . . Who Do You Really Like?

Okay, before I get started, let me point out that the Delegate Packet that was supposed to go out to every single voting delegate and alternate to the 2011 MIGOP State Convention can be found by following this link.  (It's a downloadable PDF.)  I say "supposed to go out" because, once again, someone seems to be screwing around with the credentialing process.  More correctly, there seems to be some delegates and alternates who aren't getting their convention information in a timely manner, if indeed at all.

But surveys, of course, seem to be going out to everyone (whether by e-mail or by phone) . . . and that's where we go below the fold.

If you didn't get the phone calls over the weekend, then in the past 24 hours you got the e-mail visit from the survey monkey from Midwest Polling.

The Michigan Republican Party State Convention is Saturday, January 29th in Grand Rapids, Michigan.  There are Statewide Candidates running for Michigan Republican Party Chair and Vice-Chair positions.  Please identify who you are most likely to support:

Question # 1:  Who will you be supporting for Chairman? (choose one):

    • Troy Rolling
    • Bobby Schostak
    • Undecided

Question # 2:  Who will you be supporting for Coalitions Vice-Chair? (choose one):

    • Victor Diaz
    • Norman Shinkle
    • Undecided

Question # 3:  Who will you be supporting for Outreach Vice-Chair? (choose one):

    • Kent Clark
    • Eileen McNeil
    • Undecided

Question # 4:  Who will you be supporting for Grassroots Vice-Chair? (choose one):

    • Jim Duistermars
    • Steven Kuevinhoven
    • Undecided

Question # 5:  Who will you be supporting for Ethnic Vice-Chair? (choose one):

    • Ahmar Igbal
    • Linda Lee Tarver
    • Undecided

Question # 6:  Who will you be supporting for Administrative Vice-Chair? (choose one):

    • Carl Berry
    • Jon Nunn
    • Undecided

Question # 7:  Who will you be supporting for Youth Vice-Chair? (choose one):

    • Alex Clark
    • Sarah Ledford
    • Undecided

Of course, any of us who've learned the lesson from past conventions (or are just a tad skeptical of the actual intent of these surveys) simply selected "undecided" all seven times, then "done," and called it good.  I'm going to keep `em guessing right up until I step up to the voting booth at the convention.  (How I plan on voting is none of their damn business.)

Now, do I have any actual evidence that some tomfoolery is afoot here?  No, I don't.  But I have plenty of backchannel off-the-record communication and a smoke trail the length of the Grand River.  I've learned a thing or five in my post-college political involvement, and one of them is to be quietly suspicious of anything that sets off my instinctive alarms.

I suspect that, in at least five of those seven races, a political power family who has a reputation for a "by any means necessary" approach is trying to very quietly do whatever they need to to hang onto the levers of power in MIGOP.  Not saying ... just saying.

My take?  Keep your intentions to yourself (at least in any on-the-record forum), and make damn sure that every single voting delegate and alternate you know (or know of) has those two links that I mentioned above the fold.  And then be prepared for a floor fight at both the district conventions on Friday night and the state convention on Saturday.

People wouldn't deliberately play those kinds of games.

Kevin - I'm not running this convention, but I've run others.  Simple answer - when the county convention reporting forms state "Please include your email in order to receive delegate information" and people don't, either by accident or refusal, that makes it difficult to communicate with them.
