    Anonymous Donations?

Can a candidate for U.S. Congress include anonymous donations on their FEC report? A short perusal of Jay Riemersma's reports raises serious questions about the transparency of his campaign.

It is legal for a candidate for  U.S. Congress to list anonymous donations as long as the amounts are for less than $50.00. The Riemersma FEC report filed in July lists four questionable donations. The specific citations are "JRC Anonymous" for $409 on 6/08, $307 on 6/14, $106 on 6/15, and $52 on 6/17.

For a man who ran for office claiming, "The career politicians are no longer cutting it" Jay is certainly acting more like one of them by the day. This kind of reporting is wrong because it keeps the media and the citizens in the dark. It is also illegal. Keeping one's own books in order is the first sign of a fiscal conservative. I hope Jay will put a stop to these practices. Then again, Jay might have reason to be a little leery of transparency. In his last FEC quarterly, Jay reported more donations from California than the second district. West Michigan voters should be careful to select a representative willing to stand for their principles.

    On donations.. (none / 0) (#1)

transparency is a good thing.. But painting "foreign" (other side of the country) donations as automatically suspect might be a little unneeded..

If someone has a bunch of friends or former associates who want to see them succeed, it is different than what might be considered quid pro quo.  What is the breakdown?
