While we look at the state wide, and some national offices, we cannot forget the importance of running efficient local government. This morning, I am going to a meeting where I hope to meet several county commission hopefuls.  One of them will be a guy who works for me.. his name is John.

John is the perfect candidate for several reasons:

    1. He really doesn't want to do it.  Its not a power trip, and he has reluctantly decided to look into it because I have encouraged him to do so.
    2. John has municipal experience as a first responder, and fireman and understands the workings of local government from multiple perspectives
    3. He works from a basis of logic in his approach to solutions..
    4. He understands what it means to be a taxpaying property owner who doesn't make a lot of money. (hey.. I pay what I can..)

You may know someone like John who has a set of unique qualifiers that would make them valuable to county or township government.  Get them involved.  In a couple more days, the opportunity for this go-round will be over.  It only takes a couple signatures.

Develop the farm team as it were... (5.00 / 1) (#1)

You raise a very valid point with this. Local government is where taxpayers can keep the most scrutiny on politicians, and nip the bad ones in the bud.

I personally don't see the need for township government in sparsely populated counties. I am a taxpayer in Montmorency County. The numerous townships in this 13000 +/- population county don't do a lot for the taxpayer. They do manage to pay salaries and benefits from the tax dollars and raise property taxes. No sewer, no public lighting to speak of, no municipal water, same old dirt roads.

There is no doubt that the best candidates are the ones that don't want to run. That is the conundrum.
