Breaking! Unions Cut Out Under New Budget!

Not completely, but under Michigan SB 1158 (Department of human services budget) A line has been added:

Sec. 292. The department shall not expend money appropriated in part 1 for the processing, distribution, transfer, or dispersal of any money equivalent to or representing union dues for any contract to which the state is not a party.

    Bang.

You see, in the language leading up to section 292, the budget describes paying the "private agencies" and organizations directly, yet with this addition, it makes it clear that the state of Michigan will NOT be collecting union dues from private providers who found themselves saddled with the mysterious "Michigan home based child care council"  Which had its funding stripped in Sec 291.

State Senator Jason Allen has strongly supported the inclusion of this language and was quite aware that the payments being withheld and funneled to the union was indeed wrong, and in the process of trying to find a "safety" solution for elders and children in the care of others, made the mistake of relying on language provided by those with the union interest at heart.  By encouraging this language (sec 292) which passed in the DHS budget in the Senate (along party lines) he has at least demonstrated his intent to rectify a missed fix.

We have been in contact with Senator Allen's office over the last several weeks pushing to have this looked at, and are delighted to see this correction take place.  Allen understands how this will be met ("nuclear" I believe the word was..) in the Michigan house, but has pledged to push it through to the end.

As to its effect on previous payments withheld, at this time I am unsure.

IMHO the only way to rectify this is to stop all dues immediately and pay back the day care workers in full.  But it is not going to happen.  Unions are exactly like government, once they have their hands on your money it is gone - never to be seen again.

Some how I think DHS will weasle out of this and find a way to get continued payments from some where else within the system.  Not openly though!  It has to be under the table so evil bloggers like these sites here don't find out!

...make Michigan a Right to Work state.

Kind of hard to collect dues from people who can leave a union any time they want.
