Detroit News suffers from psychological condition (or should apologize)

Wikipedia describes Multiple Personality Disorder as "a condition in which a single person displays multiple distinct identities or personalities...with an associated memory loss that goes beyond normal forgetfulness;"

Does The Detroit News need treatment for this disorder? Well, read this blurb from today's editorial praising yesterday's Supreme Court decision that ruled against treating job applicants differently based on their race:

"Treating people differently on the basis of their race is both illegal and simply wrong. It's an easily understood concept...-- and the principle that racial discrimination is impermissible has been usefully reinforced."

Okay, now read what the same editorial staff wrote about the 2006 Michigan Civil Rights Initiative to ban race preferences in government hiring, contracting and university admissions:

"It's not a civil rights measure, far from it. It's a despicable piece of work aimed at blocking legal efforts to bring equality to the state's campuses. It ought to be soundly defeated."

But at least The Detroit News was consistent before the passage of MCRI. Here's what they said about California businessman Ward Connerly when Connerly was considering helping Jennifer Gratz, a bunch of young activists, and I launch MCRI back on July 8, 2003. Their editorial's headline was:

"So far, he's (Connerely) received a cold shoulder from state Republicans, whom he hoped to enlist in the campaign. The GOP rightly sees the potential for an affirmative action ballot initiative to further divide the state along racial lines and reverse the gains the party is making among African-Americans and other minorities.

It's not clear what Connerly hopes to accomplish...the divide in understanding between whites and blacks remains wide. Toss in a ballot campaign that pits the two races against each other and all hope for finally closing that divide will be lost."
    (emphasis mine)

On October 8, 2006, The Detroit News ran another editorial called:

    "Fairness, progress demand a No vote on Proposal 2 (MCRI);
Banning affirmative action will set back equal opportunity"

"This proposal should be defeated for a number of reasons...The proposal is also needlessly divisive. Many groups, including African-Americans and women, see this measure as an attempt to set back their progress. The last thing a state that is failing collectively needs are battles that divide us as individuals."

Not two years after Michigan voters overwhelming passed a ban on government race preferences - after The Detroit News declared that ALL HOPE for closing the racial divide would be lost - these same Michigan voters overwhelmingly elected the nation's first black president.

What do I want from the Detroit News? An apology to Ward Connerly, Jennifer Gratz, and all the activists who supported the Michigan Civil Rights Initiative would be in order.

    There's a name for this condition! (none / 0) (#1)

It's called Democrat. It's not surprising or unusual. It is extremely 'serious' though so I'm glad you keep us updated on their condition.

That apology you want, don't hold your breath. The condition of Democrat progresses into conscienceless with a progressive inability to apologize.

I'd be curious to hear his mea culpa?

"Treating people differently on the basis of their race is both illegal and simply wrong. It's an easily understood concept..."

The DN has it right in yesterday's editorial as far as the New Haven decision goes, but should have lead off the comment above with GOVERNMENT.  It's indeed immoral and illegal for any governmental body to discriminate based on race.  But the bizarre idea that government then has the authority to forbid individuals and private businesses from doing so is a wrong we conservatives have gone wobbly on over the decades.  The Civil Rights Act of 1964 - wrong 45 years ago, wrong now.

The 14th Amendment does not empower any such federal overreach, though it is useful to read it over and be surprised at what an astonishingly ugly bit of victor's justice this amendment truly was

(BTW, a close reading of the 14th Amendment technically prohibits paying reparations for slavery -- further proof that, the worse the law, the greater its unintended consequences)
