    Limit UAW Political Activity

    (Promoted by Nick...)

Now that the federal government (actually, you and I as taxpayers) owns a majority stake in General Motors Corporation some things need to change, particularly when it comes to the UAW and politics.  For years they have been entrenched in the political process, particularly here in Michigan, at every level. Since these union members are now on the public dime a monumental adjustment needs to take place regarding the approach they take towards campaigns and campaign contributions.

No more blatant political slant in the UAW Solidarity magazine.  Just read any given issue and you can just feel the hatred toward the Republican Party.  The cover of the Nov/Dec 2008 issue features union members holding signs that say "Obama 08".  In fact, the entire issue is practically a campaign piece for the Democrat Party.  This should be a thing of the past.

No more "bounties" being paid by the union halls for Republican campaign yard signs.  As ridiculous and childish as this sounds it happens frequently here in southeast Michigan during every election year.

No more UAW election poll workers at every precinct being paid by the union supporting Democrats.

No more "slate" direct mail pieces from the union that list Democrats from the office of governor all the way down to dog catcher.

No more UAW organized "rallies" supporting Democrats or attacking Republicans.  I happened to see first hand the viciousness of these union "protestors" at the 2006 Detroit Labor Day parade when they accosted gubernatorial candidate Dick DeVos and his family.  What a shameful scene.

Of course the UAW could still conduct limited political activities through a political action committee.  But, there is currently no separation between day to day union operations and a PAC.  Partisan politics is so interwoven within the union that it has become a way of life.

Congress needs to seriously consider legislation that severely limits any future political activity of the now taxpayer supported UAW.  Of course, I am a realist.  I am sure the opposite will happen and the union will gain political power in the short term.  However, I am not certain if even a subsidized UAW can survive in the long term.  It seems as if an economic shift is taking place and the automotive bailouts are only delaying the inevitable demise of the UAW labor model.  Only time will tell.

The fact of the matter is that the Obama Administration is highly unlikely to do anything other than tacitly encourage the activities you have described.  Nicely stated summary--keep up the good work!

If the UNIONS were smart (?) they would keep every penny of their "political activities" accounts for themselves; to pay for their own benefits (survival) and job training.

As the Det News wrote in Mar 09' ...
"The United Auto Workers union lost more than 33,000 members in 2008, plummeting to a new post-World War II low as Detroit's Big Three continued to dramatically downsize. The union's membership fell 7.3 percent to 431,037 in 2008 -- down  33,873  from 464,910 in 2007, according to a report filed with the U.S. Department of Labor posted on a government Web site today.

The UAW has lost more than 107,000 members in the last two years, and a total of 270,000 since 2001. "

HAD the UAW took a serious look at some of our GOP candidates, and supported them, they may have still had a job!

I'd be interested to know where you got those numbers of lost union members. I'm sure they probably lost that many members in the auto sector, but how many did they gain in the government sector? UAW Local 6000 is a huge government employee local here in Michigan. The U All Welcome is also into the Federal Government big time and has big presence in other states. If you look at the UAW website you won't find mention of Local 6000 or any of the other non-auto sector locals unless you really dig. The UAW nomenklatura doesn't have to concern itself with losing funding because, guess what, you're paying it via your taxes used to pay bloated government work forces all over the country.

They put the sainted auto workers up as the public face of the Union because those "poor hardworking struggling to put food on the table" workers make for good press when you and I are oppressing them. The truth is that all "workers" in an extreme left wing world are expendable for the greater good. The greater good is that Ron Givemthefinger gets to keep his power until an orderly engineered succession takes place.

Get Unions Out of Politics! (none / 0) (#7)

No, you had it right the first time.  The federal government does own GM.  It's just that you and I as taxpayers, get to pay for it.

I agree with you 100% about staying out of politics!  I can't find a single legitimate reason, why both unions and corporations should be involved in the political process.
