    Jesse Jackson rallies auto workers

Jesse Jackson led a bus rally in Michigan yesterday.  The "Keep It Made in America" tour made stops in Hamtramck, Dearborn, Sterling Heights and Pontiac and is supposed to bring awareness to the plight of the American auto industry and its workers.

    From detnews dot com:
The Rev. Jesse Jackson led a crowd of about 200 supporters with chants including "Reinvest in our land" and "Keep hope alive" in Hamtramck. He was joined at the rally by celebrities and several elected officials, including Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich.
Stabenow, never letting a good crisis go to waste, likened the current state of affairs in Michigan to Hurricane Katrina.
Stabenow advocated for health care changes and free trade. She likened the area's woes with New Orleans, post Hurricane Katrina.

"The water has seeped in every home. We are here to say, 'We will not go under,' " Stabenow said. ""We need to make sure our companies that are competing with other countries know their country is with them."
Senator Stabenow is advocating for fee trade?  This is the free market at work.  American auto companies can no longer make and sell cars in America at a profit.  The market, no matter what the political geniuses do to manipulate it, is getting what it wants, lower labor and automobile prices.  Unfortunately, that means the party is over for in-efficient companies.  No longer can American auto companies pay nearly double the price of labor than its foreign competitors and stay solvent.

Also, free trade is exactly what allows companies to produce products over seas and import them to America.

Not to be deterred by market forces, Warren Mayor, Jim Fouts:
issued an executive order that requires his appointees to buy American-made when they purchase their next vehicle. Now, he's negotiating with the city's employee unions to include a "buy American provision" in the union contracts for the upcoming year.

If he succeeds, the order would apply to approximately 800 full-time city employees. The current employee contracts expire in June.

"It's a priority and a must. If something happened to General Motors or Chrysler, I would not be able to pay the high salaries I pay now or keep everyone employed," he said. "I am developing a strategy for expanding my campaign. I would like to see other county officials and school officials embrace the same thing."

If employees want to retain their jobs, they must buy American-made cars.
This is just what Detroit and America needs, another attempt by an economic illiterate to stop hemorrhaging with a band-aide.

    God help us!

    Jesse Jackson (none / 0) (#1)

Why does this man keep opening his mouth?  How is he at all connected to the auto industry's struggles?

Jackson needs to realize that he is irrelevant and/or counterproductive in his own field of choice (race), let alone things he knows even less about.

I don't think Michigan needs a bus tour consisting of washed-up civil-rights figures and liberal politicians to tell us that we're in trouble, anyway.  That makes about as much sense as the Pure Michigan campaign airing ads telling Michiganders how great it is in Michigan.

    I like Jesse's new message (none / 0) (#3)

Myself being a piece of poor white trash, I can listen to Jesse talk about keeping jobs here, in the country. If he goes off on some race issues, I don't really wanna listen to that stuff. But I can see where he is coming from on the jobs going overseas.

Why give all the jobs to these guys?

Hopefully one day they will do what Hugo Chavez did, and tell these companies, we own those factories now, get out.

Look at Michigan's unemployment, how can the answer to a better economy be, more outsourcing, and trade deals, that work against American workers?

"Hopefully one day they will do what Hugo Chavez did, and tell these companies, we own those factories now, get out."

I was referring to China nationalizing, throwing out American corporations, and it could happen. Imagine they have a problem in Taiwan?? America sides with Taiwan or anywhere. In NAM, they supported the North, U.S supported the South. Same in Korea. They wanna buy our stuff fine. They wanna build the stuff there, sell it there. They got alot of people, they could build the stuff and sell it to their own people.

I thought Bush, giving the automakers a loan was the right thing to do. Obama on the other hand, I don't think is doing a good job, dealing with the automakers. By encouraging GM to import Chinese cars.

This is how I was looking at it. As a former stock and bondholder of GM. I get the shit end of the stick. They close down a bunch of plants, parts suppliers, unemployment shoots up to historic levels, the value of my house falls thru the floor.  And these guys wanna send the work over to China. So then in time Ford and everybody else has to do the same thing to stay competitive on their labor costs. Further eroding any chance. of the auto industry being able to provide a decent wage to workers here.

If they do, I hope it backfires and China screws them.

I like GM, don't get me wrong, I wanna see Buick Grand Nationals, built here. Monte Carlos, built here.

What I was saying is Jesse's message, if it is the Whites being the root of all evil, ect.. I can't listen to it. I have heard over the years, black nationalists talk of foodworkers spitting in whites food. Or that black men should try to go out an impregnate as many white women as they can. I don't wanna hear that kind of stuff. but
This buy American message is a message, is a total improvement, from the older Jesse material, that was completely focused on racial issues. I can see the new message as something positive that, I like.

I think auto companies and parts suppliers could again provide work to the people here and get them off welfare and unemployment. Create wealth, and prove capitalism, can improve peoples lives.

I was looking at a chart of Michigan unemployment and Up-North looks hit real hard.

Gillman did it clear it up or is it still un-republican?
