(Promoted by Nick... one of the best member blogs in a while... way to be, Chaz!)

My aunt is one who touts herself as being the true Michigan conservative, and she is. She is an average American woman with a wonderful family of which she truly cares about and loves. She stands for liberty, low taxes, and less government. She loves life, family, and God. She is a Michigan conservative.

Being a conservative, she is never satisfied with where we are, but rather where we should be and how to attain such a goal. I am not talking about fly by the seat change. Change for the sake of change is not progress. I am talking about attaining change by moving our beloved republican party back to its roots, not evolving into a moderate republican state of philosophy.

Living by such ideals, she has struggled terribly with endorsing Senator John McCain for President. She being the aforementioned conservative feels he does not represent her.

Often I find myself reminding her of a paraphrased version of President Ronald Reagan's words: "He, who agrees with me eighty percent of the time, shall not be my enemy, but my ally."

The words of our former great President help comfort her but she still finds distress in many of Senator McCain's political positions. One of which is his stance on global warming and another was traditional marital values.

Last night, my aunt displayed positive news about a stance John McCain finally had publicly taken. He came out to say he believes marriage should be between one man and one woman. Traditional and eloquent.

So, to exhibit John McCain's stance I have borrowed from his Presidential website his stance on marriage so you too can understand a little more of what he believes:

    Protecting Marriage

As president, John McCain would nominate judges who understand that the role of the Court is not to subvert the rights of the people by legislating from the bench. Critical to Constitutional balance is ensuring that, where state and local governments do act to preserve the traditional family, the Courts must not overstep their authority and thwart the Constitutional right of the people to decide this question.

The family represents the foundation of Western Civilization and civil society and John McCain believes the institution of marriage is a union between one man and one woman. It is only this definition that sufficiently recognizes the vital and unique role played by mothers and fathers in the raising of children, and the role of the family in shaping, stabilizing, and strengthening communities and our nation.

As with most issues vital to the preservation and health of civil society, the basic responsibility for preserving and strengthening the family should reside at the level of government closest to the people. In their wisdom, the Founding Fathers reserved for the States the authority and responsibility to protect and strengthen the vital institutions of our civil society. They did so to ensure that the voices of America's families could not be ignored by an indifferent national government or suffocated through filibusters and clever legislative maneuvering in Congress.

That is a position of republican presidential nominee John McCain we as Michigan conservatives can be proud of. It is a stance liberal Californian judges are trying to eliminate. Standing for traditional marital values is overwhelmingly supported by the American public and we [American public] should not be ignored.

We are in a battle for change.

"Change is never complete, and change never ceases. Nothing is ever quite finished with; it may always begin over again. And nothing is quite new; it was always somehow anticipated or prepared for. -C.S. Lewis.

You may be that solid conservative I described. Your love for this country, family, and God is deeply rooted in firm beliefs. You are convicted by truth and logic.

As such a conservative, we must remain optimistic and always view that glass as half full. Look for the degrees in which you concur with Senator McCain. You may never describe yourself as a Michigan McCainiac and that is alright. Just remember to never disarm yourself of conservative truth, candor, and genuineness.

Stay bold and true; fight the good fight.

first of all that had nothing to do with Michigan other than that happens to be where the author lives.  This is clearly a national issue.  And Nick would have deleted or blocked further comments on it if he disagreed with its content.

Secondly, the premise of the blog was:  John McCain is not really very conservative, but since he believes that gays shouldn't have the same rights (maybe...who knows what the liar really believes) as heterosexuals, we should be ok with him.  what a horrible reason to support someone.

The issue of marriage should not be a government issue at all.  No one gay or straight should need permission (a license) to get married, and no one should get preferential treatment or vice versa for being married.

oh...and I think this is a VERY important issue for MICHIGAN!  there, nick, you can't delete it, or unfairly criticize me and not let me respond...it's about Michigan.

For the sake of procreation? I believe that is the religous intent of marrige. You are right, the state should have no say, but if we are going to hold with religous beliefs then tell me; How can homosexuals procreate?
