251 Days and counting... anytime now, Barack

In honor of Senator Hillary Clinton's ground breaking decision to step foot inside the State of Michigan this morning I thought this would be a good time to take a look at all of the amazing visits she and Barack Obama have made to the Great Lakes State in the last year.

Remember that one time in Detroit... no...

There was that town hall downriverrrrrrrrrrr... no, that's not right.

Oh, I loved it when they came to Graaaaa... yeah, nope.

Well, I swear they've been here at some point in the last year.  It's not like they'd just ignore us is it?  Actually, yes, they would, and have.

Clinton's visit this morning marks the first time she's treaded Michigan soil since she held a townhall meeting in Detroit back on June 9th, 2007.  That's 284 days between visits.

Senator Obama?  He's not doing much better.  He did manage to find the time to pick up a few checks in Grand Rapids last July 12th but it's been zilch since then.  And even though he's leading Clinton in every single poll and delegate count he isn't stopping by today.  Instead he's disenfranchising Michigan voters (Democrats' words, not mine) and working on keeping his string of consecutive days ignoring the Wolverine State going strong.  As of this morning it's been 251 days since Obama last deemed us worthy of his precious time.

Oh, and while Clinton flip-flops on our importance now that she needs us--remember, she claimed a few months back that Michigan "is not going to count for anything"-- it might be worth drawing a quick comparison with another comparably sized state to see exactly where we stand.

For instance, Clinton made more stops in Pennsylvania on March 11th than she and Barack Obama have made in Michigan, combined, in the last year.

284 Days and she's still behind one day's effort in a neighboring state.  251 Days for Obama and he isn't even trying.

Well, Michigan?  Can you feel the love?  Me either.

    MI Do-Over is Dead (5.00 / 1) (#2)
by DMOnline on Wed Mar 19, 2008 at 01:21:38 PM EST
    From Politico.com:

The headline from MIRS, Michigan's Hotline:

    Ding-Dong, Do-Over Primary Is Dead
"Time of death for the do-over Michigan primary? Call it at about 11 a.m. today."

A Lansing insider IMs to explain the latest development:

The Senate Dems just had a long caucus meeting following their long phone call with the Gang of Four [as Carl Levin and others pushing a re-vote are called], and the result is that no one moved. Votes aren't there. Thus, it will not go to a vote in the Senate. And barring some other last minute miracle that doesn't involve those four, the governor and Hillary traveling to Michigan, it is dead as a doornail.

UPDATE: State Sen. Tupac Hunter, an Obama supporter, confirms the outcome of today's meeting.

"The caucus has expressed again today that there is concern about the proposal and a great deal of unreadiness," he said, saying that sentiment is still "overwhelming."

"We informed the four great Democrats who have worked very hard to come up with a solution," he said. "It's one of those things where you can agree to disagree. The question then becomes, What do we do now?"

For those of you who apparently think playing by the rules is for sissies and changing the rules of the game half way through is perfectly fine, let this be a lesson to you.

As usual, very well written, Nick.

If this isn't comedy why am I laughing so much?

Playing by the rules (none / 0) (#4)

The DNC told the Michigan Democrats that they would be penalized for violating party rules... typical Democrat response to feel that they can play fast and loose and be forgiven at the last second. This is from the party that does not, can not, and will not take responsibility for anything. Thus a Do-Over election.

If they are to have a do-over, it will have to be financed in the next 2 days... Michigan has a rich billionaire over in Kazoo town, Jon Stryker. He could peel off 10-20 million from his walking around money and never miss it. Then they could advertize it as the Stryker Do-Over.

Now on to the do-over. Hmmm what rules for the voters? I heard that some 760,000 voters crossed over and voted for McCain. Do they get to renege and now vote in the Democrat Do-Over? If this is to be really fair, then we should be allowed to also cross over and vote in their Do-Over.

Hmmm that sounds about right! Right Michigan?

A fly on the wall of Hillary's hotel room when she realized that her last minute too little too late Michigan pandering did not work and there will be no do-over

But on second thought, maybe not.

They know there's no changing things... (none / 0) (#6)

The House and Senate would each literally have to act tomorrow to make anything happen.

Remember, Dillon is sending the House Democrats home after tomorrow's session.  Home for two weeks.  By the time they come back it'll be way too late for the local clerks and the SOS to pull off a statewide election.

    Clinton's team aren't idiots.  Technically.

They understand the reality on the ground.  What her stop today (yesterday now) did was give her a talking point that she can use during the inevitable floor fight in Denver (and leading up to it).

Of course, her team's use of the "disenfranchisement" label also gives McCain a giant talking point for the general.  And suddenly Michigan is in play for the first time since I reached voting age.
