A quick thought re: reaction at Mount Hope

Lots of people sharing lots of opinions on the right and the wrong way to react to this sort of thing and I don't know what the absolute right answer is, but I wanted to share what was on my heart tonight.

I know Jesus turned the tables of the money changers because they were defiling His Father's house.  I know, too, that when Peter grabbed his sword and started cutting his way through the Roman guard in an effort to save Jesus Himself from arrest and eventually a horrifying death on a cross (before a pretty awesome Sunday, mind you), the Lord stopped him and told him to put his sword away.  Then he picked up the guard's ear and stuck the thing back into place.

Jesus tells us to turn the other cheek.  Caregivers are also expected to protect and defend their families.

I can't help but think that the people at Mount Hope, from the stunned families in the seats to the Pastor at the pulpit, handled things PERFECTLY.

Was their liberal blood running through the aisles?  No.  And THANK GOD.  And PRAISE GOD.  That's precisely the reaction the radicals wanted from "right wingers" and church goers both.

The enemy had something in mind on Sunday but by their reaction and by the word of their testimony... by the lives they led in a very difficult time, the believers at Mount Hope glorified God.

I hope everyone will keep them in their prayers tonight and going forward.  They've been targetted now and the media firestorm over this incident is swirling in ways even I didn't expect.  The behavior of the pro-choice, radical left makes for a compelling, a remarkable and a horrifying story.  Horrifying right up until you look at the human side of things and understand that Mount Hope is a church whose people love Jesus and on Sunday amidst persecution and assault, put Him and His Word over their own personal feelings and interests.

Let us do the very same.

My initial reaction to this story, and one that still bubbles up everytime I think of it is pretty well rooted in anger... I continue to meditate on the Word and to pray that feeling passes... that I'm capable and filled with the same compassion on display at Mount Hope on Sunday morning.

Because I think self defense is a good and noble thing. Because I can appreciate the balance of being angry but not sinning. There is a season and time for peace, war...

Your words are very timely in that we should pray without ceasing. Always giving thanks. Doing onto others as we'd want done to ourselves. We are to be salt and light.

Yes, I can see that the Church handled things just fine and we can't improve on that.

But we're not martyrs and doormats and victims. We are children of the most high God, temples, good news bearers, priests and kings, provoking jealousy, wise as serpents and harmless as doves, in season and out, always ready with armor on as able soldiers.

I don't know what I'm trying to say here. I do receive your admonitions whole heartedly. I'm disappointed that humans can treat other humans with such disrespect and cruelty. I wish there were more I could do. I will do what works as you suggest.

    Violence (none / 0) (#2)

It appears that the church family was not in any actual physical danger themselves. Thus, the action was appropriate, they turned the other cheek. Had someone been physically harmed, was being beat, then physical defense would have been appropriate.

These hoodlums provoked, but did not get what they wanted, physical retaliation. Kudos to Mount Hope, the church family, and the pastor.

Double-checking the local media in my neck of the woods (i.e. The Detroit News, 2, 4, 7, 760, 950 &  1410), and Fox News & Drudge, I cannot find any mention of this happening outside of RightMichigan  & the Lansing knock-off of The Metro Times.

I don't discount for a second that the MSM is beyond playing favorites on what gets covered, but I'm finding it hard to believe that not one of these outlets even had a blurb mentioning what happened.

Don't interpret this to mean that I'm doubting Nick's version of the events, but not having any one of these outlets above cover a protest taking place in a Church is bizarre to say the least.

I'm also having a problem with this version of what happened:

When Eaton County Sheriff's deputies arrived, they questioned the remaining protestors in the church parking lot. Elieff and other church staff questioned the Bash Back members why Mt. Hope Church had been singled out.

"I don't know," was an almost universal response.

Elieff acknowledged the group's right to protest, but he said the church's civil rights were infringed upon when the service was disrupted.

No one was arrested at the church, and, Elieff said, as far as he knew, no arrests have been made.
"I would have preferred that they had all been taken in," he said.

Just where did Eaton County dredge up these deputies at?

Several days later, and they don't have any names to go on (especially in a rural area)?

To say that this is hard to believe is an understatement.

for many years and Pastor Dave is a man of God.  I am not surprised at his reaction.  I called the church and encouraged them to prosecute.  David Williams, the media contact told me they are still considering what they may do.  He also send me their press release that I posted on my blog

I also called the Eaton County Sheriff's dept to find out why the attackers were not arrested however, the office was closed because of Veteran's Day. I intend to call tomorrow.

We are called to forgive however, actions should have consequences, and these people need to be held accountable for theirs. 1 Timothy 1:9

If they are not, I fear that this will happen again to another church on another Sunday morning

I tend to agree with the authors comments about not resorting to violence unless someone is actually being assaulted. It is so hard to be Christ to these people when they act like total idiots, like they did at Mount Hope.

Just a thought? If God's people loved him the way they claim too, and seriously sought him on their knees, would it make a difference in our churches?

And if our churches were filled with Holy Spirit anointed believers, and God's power was truly manifested in our midst. Would this stop the enemies of the Cross from terrorizing us like this?

If we as believers were full of God's power like we ought to be, these people would not be able to stand against it, and they would know without a doubt that there is a God in Heaven, and his church is not one to be messed with!

    God Bless!

I'm reading Nick's comment and man, I just can see why Michigan is so heavily democrat. You guys are just afraid of your own shadow. A church was just invaded and you guys are breathing big-time sighs of relief because of one thing, you're just clueless on how to act. Corrie Ten Boon was so right when she said the failing of modern society is the lack of discernment. If that was your home broken into and vandalised, you'd be so charitable about it? Yah, right. So when it's God's home broken into, we should be "turning the other cheek?" Or is that the excuse given for being afraid to act or not just knowing what to do, I wonder.

For some reason I don't understand, you'all are wanting the MSM to pick this up and run with it. The MSM, caring about a church? Helloooo! For what reason? So people all across our fruited plains can be shocked? That's funny. You guys want to turn the other cheek while the rest of us get all mad about it.

Do you not remember the last time this happen a christian security guard, and two others I believe, shot at the perpetrator. Understood, this guy was dealing bullets himself. The point is, somebody wasn't afraid - based on what others might think - to act.

Nobody is saying bullets had to fly. But you can't be afraid to be what we are, American Citizens. As church goers we have the right to protect ourselves just like anybody else in this country. It's our right. It's our duty. I'm not going to make apologies for my church upbringing because I'm afraid the MSM might take my words and mince them into something some poor heathen will misconstrue. If you are going to live your life based on fear, you ain't got God guiding you.

Nick almost gets it right when he invokes Jesus turning over the money lender tables in the Sancturary. House of God stuff. Amen. But then he loses it on Peter's ear trimming. Duh! Jesus was dying for souls to be saved and a movement to begin. Peter's knife wasn't going to last much longer against armed temple guards with swords. Nick can talk from his heart all he wants, but I say, Nick is all gooblydeegook.

For one thing, I don't think you guys are really turning the other cheek. Rather, you want to look like your turning the other cheek so long as the MSM and raises some outrage, or why else ask for it?

The sub station handling the case, as I understand it.

    Delta County Sheriff

A kind word for them to do a thorough investigation and take steps to encourage this kind of thing doesn't happen in the future.

I don't understand who we can just site around and not do anything about this. This is only the begining. They will feel Emboldened to do more things like this or worse. I'm sorry but if I were there and this was happening in front of my wife and children I would have acted. Those people would have left that church feeling a lot worse. I feel that we can not be passive any longer!! This is why this country has taken a turn for the worse because people don't want to hurt someone else or hurt their feelings. Enough is enough. We need to take back our Christian country and stand up for what we believe.

This is evidence of what Sin does to the Human heart. In this case the sin is homosexuality but sin has many faces just read the book of Romans. The Gay movement doses not have the right to mandate to the Christian the truth that homosexuality is sin. The Gay movement claims to be a loving people? But what we see are people full of hate towards little Old ladies and innocent children as witnessed here in Mount Hope Church. The Gay movement Seeks tolerance, but has NO tolerance towards others who don't subscribe to sodomy. The Gay movement hates a person who is a Christian and mocks Jesus who gave his life so that they can have eternal life, while the Christian loves the gay person and rejoices when he repents. The Gay movement demands the right to protest against Prop. 8 and at the same protest surrounds a little Old Lady in Palm Springs California and through violence takes her right to protest away, but they don't stop there, these men Rip the cross out of her hands and jump on it like a bunch of little babies. The Gay movement is a lawless movement by the evidence I see. The bible teaches "the Mystery of Lawlessness is already at work"   this is the demonic gospel. There is no law this movement won't oppose or break, no person they won't physically harm or provoke, no line they won't cross or erase to take rights away from others. The Gay movement needs to form a group that redefines there message if they even care. If they continue these behaviors, it's time for Christian Men and Men of Valor across the country to form a group of there own and go on the offensive with a loving message to the gay movement to stop the attacks and if you don't the only alternative is to protect our Women and children and our churches and seek them out.
